8 String Fretless

Post by rickde »

I just saw this wicked 8 string fretless Ric on this site: http://www.fretless12.com/guitars.htm

He claims it is the only one Rickenbacker ever made. I can't seem to upload the pic so have a look on the page.

Mark Rowe is also a member here.
Maybe he'll find some time from his busy gigs and chime in to let us know more about his unusul Silver Fretless 8 stringer.

If I recall correctly, there was a thread a few months back in which he warned the world that someone had stolen the photos off of his website and was trying to "sell" that bass on e-bay.

in the early '80's Rickenbacker custom made a 370/12 for my friend, so at one point they were open to it.

John, you are right, there was a bogus eBay posting for Mark Rowe's bass; I was the one who alerted him because I had seen his website at one time and remembered that he had the only 8-string FL made.

Jerry, I tend to believe that the factory was 'open to suggestion' into the early '90s as well because my 370/12v64 FG (possibly the only right-handed 370/12v64 made) is a December 1993 issue (L6 date code). Someone, possibly a RIC dealer, talked the factory into making it, as it was not offered as an optional configuration of the 360/12v64.

They were going to make me an all black fretless 4003 just about three years ago, I realize that that is not really a custom bass but it was an option that wasn't offered at that time I believe. A salemen from GC called them for me and they were all for it, said they had a bass with black trim ready to go right at that time and asked if I wanted Chrome or black hardware.

Bob-- Did you go ahead and buy the bass?

No I didn't have the cash, GC wanted it all upfront. I had been buying things there for a one to two month layway, and they wouldn't do it for this. I really wanted that bass too.

Sorry to take so long to respond, it's been a busy summer! There's a great write-up about this bass right here on this web site at Rickenbacker Registry.<p>
Somebody did try to sell this on eBay a few months ago, thanks to Gary I got the auction cancelled quickly. It's a great playing / sounding bass and it's definitely NOT going to be up for sale any time soon! Image
