John's Last Public Performance

Anyone know why John choose to participate in an ode to Sir Lew Grade (which amounted to his very last performance in front of an audience). I thought he HATED the guy. I KNOW he performed "Slippin' & Slidin'" emphasizing the "ain't gonna be your fool no more" line and had his band wore "Two-faced" masks, but it still seems weird that THIS drew John out for the final show of his life.
