September '72 Eggplant BG 4001

I finally got a day off today and decided to take some pics of the bass. I've discovered that a few of the pots are not original and I will probably just get a whole new assembly from Mike Parks. I've got the bass mocked up so you can see before and after. Hopefully I will get the bass up and running in a few weeks! Looking at the photo's the bass still looks JG, but is just that beautiful dark Eggplant BG.

That was a Gibson Marauder pickup (guitar) in the treble position. I have no clue what they were thinking! I've got a beautiful '73 pickup that will be going in the bass. (thanks Sergio!) There is one badly stripped screw in the tail piece that I cannot get out. Will probably have to drill that one out.

The rods look like one is tighter than the other. The neck was nice and straight so I'm assuming this is ok. I do not know anything about Ric truss rods!

Should I do something about the fingerboard wear? Should I send it to Dale to seal it back up?

Nice, that's one of my favorite finishes. Before you get it all back together with strings, give it the Scratch X and Zymol beauty treatment! Then take more pic for us.

The BG is so dark you can hardly see the skunk stripe.

Cool Sergio. No hurry on that. The Marauder pickup was screwed into the original aluminum plate which for some reason was modified in shape. That "custom" plexiglass pickup mount went straight to the trash!

Ok, I'm not as hip as some, what's the joke. I could not tell you what a Gibson Marauder is, so a pic, and a description of the tone, would help in my desire to become hip!

Gibson Marauder was a fairly low budget model they made in the mid to late 70's. The S-1 had a similar design, but had 3 single coil pickups. The pickup was not wired properly in the bass so I never had the chance to hear it. I can imagine it was quite thin sounding though.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm interested in the answer to this as well since my (lack of) luthiery skills has yielded the same result on my 4003.

Not necessarily. You know, Ric toasters are guitar pickups, with 6 pole pieces, and they don't sound thin on a bass. Fender Musicmaster basses also had a guitar pickup and they are not thin-sounding at all. If the Marauder pickup sounded thin, it was probably because the cap wasn't shunted.
