On the basis of all the available information submitted to the Rickenbacker Registration Page to date, it would appear that
Rick James played a Model 4001 White Rickenbacker bass.

I loved his Super Freak sound on that bass, I saw one of his albums with a blue Ric too. (Azureglo?)
