4003FL strings advice

Post by rneuburger »

I've bought my 4003FL with nylon strings and changed now to the original RIC strings, but I am not yet sure that I will stick with them.
Anybody with suggestions on 4003FL strings?

Welcome Ralph! I have a 4003FL with a set of the old RIC nylon strings (which you can't get anymore) but I have played LaBella's and they are pretty darn close. I think the main reason I like my old RIC strings is because they are old and have gotten nice and soft with years of oily buildup. (gross, but effective)

Welcome, Ralph!
Please post some pics, we particularly love to see out of the ordinary Ricks.

I use the LaBella black tapewound strings, 760N. They are easy to play and look cool against the black trim option.
I think I should buy another bass...

Welcome Ralph.

D'Addario Chromes. Give a great sound and feel good too.

Welcome Ralph! I had Chromes on my 4003FL and loved the tone. Of course, the toasters helped in that department, too.

Welcome to the forum, Ralph. I have D'Addario Chromes on my 4001FL and I have RIC strings on my 4003FL.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

Pyramid Golds sound great on them, do do TI's. I wouldn't keep RW's on a fretless very long unless you have an extremely light touch. I have Pyramids on my new 4003FL and I just put light gauge GHS bright flats on my 72 4001FL and they sound good.

Another vote for LaBella flats. I use them on my 78 4001FL and they sound great. I have the same set on my 82 4001 . They feel very comfortable and regardless of being flats, they still have that RIC growl.
I am good with my fingers and I can do it all night !

Thanks everyone for sharing!
I will start with trying the LaBella flats. The RIC RW's will indeed go of.

I like the Chromes! Nice smooth feel and great sound. I don't play fretless, but they sound great on my fretted Rick basses. Same on my OLP/Music Man SR bass.
I recently went back to playing a Rickenbacker bass. Its like meeting an old friend again
