Get one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FLUKE-8000A-Digital-Multimeter-CEN-TEK-MULTI-METER_W0QQitemZ110110561646QQcategoryZ1504QQcmdZViewItem

I got mine in the mid '80s and has been great. Mine has the battery option to make it portable. There are a bunch out there for cheap. I got mine for $65.00, new, the meter was $700.00.

Ya know, I lost a tenth of an ohm the other day, that may help find it!

Another brand to check out is Keithley. These are real nice and a good friend of mine used to work there as a technician. Keithley is near Cleveland. Just like those good chrome platers! Image

The Fluke 179 looks to be a decent meter. The true RMS feature is good if you are working on amplifiers and need to measure circuits with AC voltages. I have an older Fluke 87 III (true RMS) that has worked flawlessly. These are great meters but not inexpensive to buy. I also have a Tripplett that has worked equally as well. The Tripplett is engineered in the states but produced overseas. The Fluke was produced here but some of their products are now produced out of the US. I recently purchased a Fluke thermal couple reader for work and it was made in China. I am not sure if that is a good price on the 179. The above link should aid you in researching the proper price. I order from Newark Electronics for work but I believe that you need to have a business account to buy from them.
