Jefferson Airplane Videos

Post by 35012 »

I've been in a sort of YouTube mania lately:

As the forum’s resident unofficial self-appointed Jefferson Airplane “expert” and “historian” I am very well acquainted with all of the above. I hesitate, however, to post too much JA content for fear of being over exposed, over indulgent and making myself a general nuisance to all of you who might not share my “obsession” with all things Airplane related.

But since someone else has started this thread . . .

For a band that was as great and famous as the Airplane were, there is actually, relatively speaking, very little existing live footage of them. And I’d say 90% of the known material comes from the following sources:

Montery Pop
Woodstock
And the two U.S. “Educational Television” specials (‘Night at the Family Dog’ and ‘Go Ride the Music’).

Most of the videos on YouTube (with some exceptions) are lip-synched endeavors from TV appearances.

Jorma told me once that a film crew followed them around during their European tour of 1968 (the one in which they appeared with the Doors). But the footage seems to have disappeared forever. A great horrible shame.

The interesting thing is that there is tons of live recorded audio out there (that has been traded for eons) but very, very little video.

Note 1: Instead of the version of ‘Pooneil’ linked in previous post, check out this one instead (from the ‘Family Dog’ show):

Includes Jack’s greatest bass solo.

Note 2: ‘High Flying Bird’ from Monterey Pop is the reason (well, the first reason) I fell in love with the Airplane’s music, decided to try and become a musician and started me on my folk and folk-rock path. ‘HFB’ (a great song about coal miners) was written by Billy Edd Wheeler, was brought to the band by Paul (of course), is performed in Bm and includes great shots of Paul's 360/12 in all of its original Fireglo glory!

Oh, one other little trivia tidbit -
Anyone notice (from the live Pooneil clip) something a little strange or different about Paul's 360/12 MG?

I will watch the vids when I get home, so I may be speaking too soon.

Ok, Mark - I think Flowers of the Night is their best, and it isn't even them, officially!!!

Let's hear it for the Baron!!!

Well, there are a few others...Volunteers, Wooden Ships, Ballad of the Chrome Nun.

I LOVE Grace's voice, so most anything that she belts out, I will like!!

The new girl at the 75th has that same haunting, powerful thing happnin......

OK, for my 800th post (!?) -
For those who couldn't care less or who couldn't notice in the video, here is a photo of Paul's original MapleGlo 360/12.

Notice anything missing or altered?
The upper pickguard is cut in half! (To make room for the vertical racing stripes.)
And speaking of missing, anything gone from Jack also?

My apologies if your post was in jest, but that's the original from-the-factory guard for that guitar.

Here's one out of left field (although I'm sure JA fans knew about it):

You're right, sorry.

Will have to ask him about that next time.
