Laryngitis

Post by melibreits »

I'm just getting over a nasty cold, and this afternoon I almost completely lost my voice! I love to sing, so this is kind of a bummer for me, and I had a nice big block of free time this afternoon for the first time in weeks, so I wanted to make some music--normally for me that means singing and accompanying myself on guitar or keyboard. But, since my voice is gone and will probably be out of order for the next several days, I used the opportunity to just play guitar and had a blast with my 615. I set my Valvetronix amp on "UK Blues" and worked on some fun blues progressions, and had a great time attempting to play some leads (my attempts are usually pathetic).... but it forced me to actually work on them since I couldn't sing, and by the end of my session it was actually sounding pretty decent. I guess when I've lost my primary "instrument" I was forced to do more with one I could still use, LOL!

I guess in the meantime it's lots of herbal tea with lemon and cough drops for me....

Hope you feel better and regain your voice soon, Melibee!! Isn't it great that the Forum doesn't require the power of speech at all Image

Long hot showers with plenty of steam help too, to moisturize the tissues in the throat and larynx.

Sometimes when I'm sick I'll take a regular bathroom hand towel and drape it over my head right down in the sink and run hot water and breather steam for five minutes. Also, of course, hot spicy sauce/food is great for clearing out the old sinuses.

Oh yeah, the spicy food is always great for a cold.... A couple of days ago we made shrimp cocktail, and I added LOTS of extra horseradish to the sauce, and it cleared my airways right out for a little while.... burned the soreness right out of my throat, too.

As far as steam goes, that's a great treatment as well. My father is 100% Finnish-American, and when I was growing up he built a sauna in the back of our garage. Whenever any of us got sick we would sit in the sauna and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the ladle of water that we would pour over the hot rocks, and the heat and eucalyptus steam would offer instant relief from any kind of congestion. I kind of miss that form of cold treatment, but I've got a nice big whirlpool tub that offers some consolation.... Image

But you miss the ecstasy of jumping into a freezing cold lake, Melissa.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

....No, that was rolling in the snowbank outside of the door!

No really, I've never been too fond of the thermal shock treatment, LOL!

After all, I wouldn't want to damage my finish! Image

I hope the voice is back soon, Melibee! Yelling at the boys will be far more effective if some sound comes out!! Image

Rest up and get well soon Melissa. Stick with learning to play lead though. Besides being a very enjoyable occupation, it may take your mind off being ill.

My voice is sort of back today, but I think singing would probably be too much of a strain.... Worked more on some lead playing today, and am having so much fun with it!

Have really been bonding with the 615 these last couple of days--what a great rocker that guitar is! The sound and feel of it are simply amazing.

Be gentle on the voice. It sounds like you're well on the road to recovery. Take care, and get well soon.

You could be the Janis Joplin of Praise Music.
I suppose those two don't exactly go together.

Well,it kinda does. You see, Southern Gospel came mostly out of Gospel blues, which came out of the field hollers, went into the church, out into the bars, back into the church (when it was called the "devil's music"), and finally, to us!

All that to say, it's the words that make the difference, not the music, or the voice! {:^)
