"Lovely Rita" was always a favorite of mine. And not just a favorite, but a Real Favorite. I always viewed it in the same way as their blockbuster hits, even though the song is usually relegated to the b-side...just a nice, catchy, funny one to fill the album and carry us on to the next song. But I've always felt it offered something more.
Is there another song out there that sounds like Lovely Rita? I cannot think of one, not before 1967 anyway. This one is out there on the edge, just freewheeling musicality and songwriting at its freest ---wait. freeest...free-est. Hm. Freest.
...at its most free. And the often maligned segue ending has always been a highlight of the album to me. This is one of Paul's many cool and experimental moments, infused with sharp Lennon vocals to lend it Extra Credit. They end up uttering those percussive "aa" sounds in a really ingenious way.
This kind of song is always a longshot for a single, not the kind of thing we ever seem to be looking for. But I wish it was. Given the choice between Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake or a quick radio spin of Lovely Rita...well, I know what I'd pick.
