Purple 1976 4001?

Hi new member to this forum. I have just put a 4001 on layby and was wondering if someone had some advice for me. Some background first - This will be my second Ric since 1984. I had a '77 Autumglo which I sold for an Aria SB1000 active. Which I no longer have as I use a Shergold Marathon 6 string bass (which is tuned as a baritone guitar). So I like the unusual bass and would never follow the norm if I can avoid it

So this 1976 ric is a dark semi transparent purple, which looks almost black from a distance. Don't know if this is the purpleburst or Burgandyglo (more purple than burgandy). The serial # is hard to read due to sweat corrosion. You can still make out numbers, but they are very hard to clearly be sure. Is there a CSI ;-)method to bring out the numbers? Tried pencil and rubbing with paper..doh no luck.

Do you have a picture you can post? I would love to see a purple Ric bass.... sounds cool. Purple is not a standard color for a Ric....

If it's a grape-type of purple, it's a refin.

Most of the Burgundyglo Rics I've seen from the '70s were on the redder side of burgundy. The '60s BG finishes (again, in my experience) were much darker, and did indeed look black from a short distance.

O.K....Everyone back on the purple bus... and maybe if we get enough input, Kenny can feedback the powers that be, that this would be a cool colour to have in the Ric line up...

The fact that it is a transparent finish makes me think its original. I was just looking at a burgundy bass last night, and I was struck by how different the color was than my '73 which is pretty, uh, Burgundy... But I've seen some that were more eggplant colored, although, as Kenny says, most of those were '60s models.

My April 73 Burgundyglo 4001 appears eggplant coloured. As mentioned above, it looks to be jetglo until you are within a couple of feet of it. I've always found it very difficult to capture its true colour in a photo. Oh well.
But purpleburst would be a very cool finish!

And my 4001 Burgundyglo is a Dec '73 and it is a lighter wine sort of color. Only in obscured lighting does it appear to be black. It is definitely lighter than the '76 BG that is now on ebay. Jon I think I've seen pictures of your bass, and it is a beaut! I'll trade with ya anytime!

Jon, I've seen a photo of your bass over at Bjorn's site,...very cool, eggplant color is the perfect way to describe it.
