Is this normal?

As some of you know, I just picked up a 2004 JG BT from Japan that has some odd aesthetic things going on like 7 screw tailpiece and late 90s pickguard, but I noticed something else today.

See the holes on the sides of the plate that the pup sits on. Do all of them have that now?

I think so. I vaguely remember reading about what those were there for: mounting a different kind of pickup, I believe. Anyone?
