Very cool Marc! My book arrived on Saturday morning and it pretty much put all other weekend plans on hold. I finished it a couple hours ago. Having read all of the other books, I had to read this one

I went with my 10-year old to get his copy at our local library at midnight Friday night. Our town had a lot of activities for this. He's a huge fan, having read all of the other books at least 3 times each (seriously, I think that's pretty awesome for a kid who hates studying already).

I remember when the last book came out and I didn't hear anything about it until the day they showed those people waiting for the midnight release. I couldn't imagine doing that myself someday!

As much of a craze that the HP series is, it's nice to see kids wanting to read. Hopefully with this being the end of the series it won't stop them from reading other things.

I highly suggest Atlas Shrugged or Fountainhead. *snicker*

Down here in Georgia, we have a mother of a couple of elementary school kids who is trying to have the Harry Potter books banned from our county school system. She's claiming that the series promotes the Wicca religion and teaches kids to lie, cheat and steal (She's admitted that she's never even read one of the books).

She started with a request to the school where her children attend that they remove the books from the library. The school decided the books' merits outweighed her concerns, and denied her request. She then appealed to the county Board of Education, who held a hearing, and decided that the school acted appropriately by keeping the books available.

Undaunted, this mother next filed an appeal with the state Superior Court. They held a hearing, and upheld the state court's decision. She is now planning on getting on the U.S. court's docket, with plans to take it all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary.

My Grandma's books were pretty good too, although she was a strict orthogonal left-wing intellectual even by today's lights.

Being into SciFi and Fantasy on the side (yes I regularly attend SFF Anonymous meetings but it doesn't help) I like the Potter series too, got my copy Saturday in the USPS from Amazon (in a special HP mailer and everything

), and inhaled it cover to cover in two hours. They can be a pretty quick read, but fun and tasty. Like a trip to a really good Chinese Buffet Restaurant

I can't wait to see how the movie someday will do that opening special effect, of the body rotating in mid-air above the luckless Malfoys' dinner table..........

None that she ever publicized. Ayn Rand was a very private woman.

My Grandma was too, and she was an author. But Ayn was not my Grandma's first name, Greg.

Too bad! The Pledge has "One Nation Under God" and you don't hear me complain!

Seriously, if it gets kids reading, and it's not R-rated violent garbage, it's GREAT in my opinion. Some people need hobbies... they have too much time on their hands.
