1984 330 = rare??

Post by beatcomber »

I own a fireglo 330 with a March 1984 s/n - I ordered it from my local retailer in May and received it in June '84.

It is probably one of the last 330s to have a narrow headstock, old-style truss rods, and x-bracing, and has the unusual feature of factory-installed Grover Rotomatics. It is also rather heavy due to the thick body top - common on early '80s Rickenbackers.

In the 23 years that I have owned this guitar, I have NEVER come across another 330 from 1984, nor another with the same exact features as mine. (I HAVE seen a few from '81-'83, as well as the post-FC Hall updated 330s from 1985 onward.)

This makes me wonder how many 330s were produced in 1984, because it sure seems like not too many are out there. Over the years I have asked readers of the various Rickenbacker-friendly forums if anyone has an '84 like mine, and have never gotten a positive response. (I find it hard to believe that I have the only one.)

Hopefully Mr. Hall or someone else at Rickenbacker has easy access to the production info from that year and can shed some light on this question.

Hi Glenn: I can remember John Hall giving a post once claiming that the 330/6 was the most widely produced model ever made by Rickenbacker, I can only assume that this is still true and hasn't changed. I know Trig has an '83, but in my own travels I haven't seen too many from that period myself. One thing you may try is to check the registry here on the RRF for 330s in the database, maybe you'll see some in the files.
