I see the 4005, but what am I hearing?

It's not really the 4005, right? Sounds to me more like a Fender played with a pick and palm-muted. Or is it the sound of the 4005?

Well, you also hear an acoustic guitar and none visible. You could be right on which bass, but that sound could also have been created with a Rick 4005 picked and palm muted, or with a Rick 4001 picked with the mute up.

4005s have a mute under the bridge cover, so this could well be John's 4005.

I remember this video being discussed on the forum before. I believe John used a Fender precision throughout the Tommy recording, but used the 4005 for its looks when they filmed this video.

I think the recording was done with a p-bass but he used the 4005 for the video ...

I think you're right. For one thing, that definitely is an acoustic guitar, too, and not Pete's SG pictured in the video. They're just miming to the song with some cool instruments.

The sound came from Tammy's camcorder/digital camera. The bass had 3 1/2 year old Chromes flatwounds on at the time of this video; does this sound like a "hollowbody"?

4005s are the most tonally versatile Ricks.

Not at all, in fact I was surprised at how good it sounds, very clear unlike many "hollow" basses.

I'd really, really love to say this bass was on Tommy, but folks here are right that album is all Fender. This bass DOES appear on The Seeker, and on John Entwistle's first solo album (and maybe the second, but that's based on the Rittor book interview which is in Japanese, and my Japanese friend found the translation tough!!!)This Beat Club sequence gave the bass a "Tommy" connection (it runs to several of the album songs), enhanced by his comment in the Entwistle instrument collection book (based on John's comments but actually published after his death - great pictures!!!). There's a couple of other clips of it with the Who too floating about - a colour mime to "I can see for miles" and a BW clip of the Seeker...... and, it makes my day everytime I open its case!!!!!!(playing it makes the whole week!!!!!)
