Amp Question

Hi all.

I have seen a nice Traynor YBA200 on the bay in the states. The seller says they ship worldwide. It would still work out a fair bit cheaper than getting one in the UK. Just wondering though...would the different plugs we use cause any problems?

For the amp, shipping and insurance it weighs in at £441 compared to £665 from a UK store. To me that looks a great saving but would the power thing be an issue?

Yes, we run 120 volts @60 Hz, in the UK it's 230 volts @ 50 Hz. No compatability. I suppose you could have it modified, but that would require a new transformer, the most expensive part in an amp. Might make your savings dissapear.

Most modern amps have windings for both 120 and 240 on the power transformers, even old SVT's from the 70's do, you have to know what you are doing though to switch them. Check with Traynor, if they do which is likely a good tech should be able to do that fairly cheaply. At least for a lot less than the 400 bucks which I think the difference is.

Looking at the service manual for the YBA200, I do not see a 240 tap on the primary of the power transformer.

I have just pulled the trigger on a traynor yba200 and the matching cab. I've never seen one, let alone tried one. Please tell me I'm not mad!

I don't know if you found your answer, but I've got a buddy in Surrey that runs some SF Fenders through a step-down transformer with no mods to the amps. They're completely stock US models and the transformer unit plugs into your 230 and has outlets at the correct 120V US voltage and current. I think you just have to make sure that it can handle correct amperage for the unit you're powering it with.

I like my YBA200 a lot and the matching cabinet has about the widest frequency response of anything you can find. For bass, I usually roll back the horn a bit with the knob on the back of the cab. If you want a real thrill some time, crank the horn all the way up, hit the bright switch on the head, turn the scoop control up all the way and plug in a Rick twelve-string. I've never heard another amp that can play that bright and clean.
