Smokie

Post by longhouse »

The Suzi Quatro links in Others set me on a You Tube quest -and I was taken back to my childhood in the seventies where I found Suzi doing 'Stumbling In' (link at bottom) with a group called SMOKIE.

A terrible name indeed. Turns out they favored Rickenbacker instruments on some songs:

The frontman Chris Norman seemed to presage Weller and Foxton in the hairstyle dept (once he lost that horrid perm Image ).

'Take Good Care of My Baby' is fun too:

'If You Think...' - Ric bass:

And the radio hit 'Stumbling In':

He's a bit scary in this one. Especially the dance bit! Suzi was a doll.

Cool links, awesome hair. I'd never heard of Smokie until I spent a year in South Korea, where (for some reason) they were quite popular relative to their following in North America. "Living Next Door to Alice" was a perennial favorite. I'm glad to know they were a Rick band!

Hmmm...you know, the Korean word for cannabis is directly translated as "happy smoke"...

You could look it up...

The bass on this video is an "S" model.

Dont see too many white/black trim "S"'s.

They're really well known in Europe, kind of like the European equivalent of the Grateful Dead (not exactly, but in terms of how well known they are and considering the Dead are not as well known in Europe).
