Value of an '80 JG 4001

Post by brianeharmonjr »

Hey all, I'm about to acquire a 1980 Ric 4001 in Jetglo. How does this compare in value to, say, a new 4003. Would my (soon to be mine) '80 4001 be worth more? Basically what I am trying to get at is, I would rather have a Ric bass that isn't jetglo. I would like to trade for a more recent COY, like a blueburst, turquoise, midnight blue, blueboy, or a mapleglo or white with black trim. What could I expect to get in trade, or should I just hang onto it? I'll get some pictures up as soon as I receive it.

Unless the 80 is immaculate, I don't see anyone trading 1:1 for what you are looking for. Personally I wouldn't pay for than 1000 for one...but it would have to be in great shape.

Just testing the waters. Also, the case is non-original, but everything else is original. Also, it is in really good condition with only minor play wear.

I dunno Sean, YOU might only be willing to pay $850 for a 1980 4001, but recent ebay selling prices indicate to me that the rest of the Rick buying public is willing to pay quite a bit more.

I still think it's lunacy to pay over a grand for a non-collectable 4001 when new, no issues 4003s are available for just a little more.

To you a late 70's 4001 may be non-collectible Wes, but not to everyone. Although a new Rick 4003 is an awesome bass, Rick isn't making any more skunk stripe 4001's. Some people prefer a 25-year-old (or more) 4001 to a brand new 4003.

Also, I think the lack of availability of new 4003's is driving their prices higher, which in turn is driving the prices of 70's 4001's higher as many people in the market for a new Rick turn to an older one instead.

Probably. I've just pumped gas for 35c/gal and sold a Rick for $250 in my lifetime. I think I've finally turned into my father.

based on my own recent purchases/sales and ebay sales, and if it is in very good shape + (other than the player wear), i'd say you are closer to the $1200 range.
