Shenanigans on craigslist

Post by lyle_from_minneapolis »

I just read this on my local craigslist, and I thought, "HAR!":

Brand new Big Muff from Musician's Friend: $76.50
Used, non-vintage Big Muff listed on craigslist: $90.00
Realizing that some moron will seriously inquire about its availability: Priceless.

[Flag away, if you must. It was worth having even a few of you read this.]

I saw this posted on NYC CL yesterday:
This is an open letter to all people who’ve posted here about stolen gear, but more specifically, to all of the “new” Brooklynites who’ve reported their gear stolen out of their cars in Bushwick, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, et al.

First off, let me say that there is no feeling worse than having something you love and cherish be taken from you. When I was a young child my house was burglarized and the feeling of loss and fear remained for a long time. Moving on…

Before you moved here, did you happen to do any research on the areas in which you were moving? The fact is, most of New Yorkers know and have always known that these areas are rough! They’ve always had high crime rates and most of tend to stay away from there if at all possible. You on the other hand, blindly move in and expect to be living the New York adventure with no consequence?

Then you go on craigslist and ***** that you get mugged, your bike gets stolen, your apartment burglarized and worst of all you gear gets stolen out of your car? I’m sorry if this is being mean, but this is just a thing that’s plainly obvious to the rest of us…

Don’t leave gear in your car!!!! Especially if you live in the afore mentioned neighborhoods.

In fact, don’t ever leave anything of value, or that looks like it may be of value in plain sight in your car! Lock the doors, get one of those clubs and make sure everything is off of the seats.

Do you know who takes this stuff? Crackheads! They walk around tweaked out of their minds and it’s nothing to them to crack your window open and see if that black box on your back seat is worth anything.

Don’t give them a reason. Sure you’re tired at the end of the night. The gig was laborious and all you want to do is sleep, but take those extra 10 minutes and haul your 8x10 Ampeg cab and 150 watt Orange head up the stairs (side-note: why do you have this **** in NYC? The venues are small and many have backline…).

Sorry is this was long and disjointed, but it is really sad to read all of the stolen gear posts and think that this would be avoided if you just used your head. If you want to be a hipster and help gentrify ethnic communities, that’s on your Karma, but don’t be mad when they exercise their character and steal your stuff!

P.S. – TO all of the people that get their gear stolen at shows/load out, get someone to watch your gear at all times! Even when it’s in the club in the equipment area and especially when it’s in the street. Get a band member, girlfriend or pay someone to watch it at ALL times… it’s worth it.

Musicians express themselves in the most incoercive, rambling way, when writing. I've read guitar descriptions on ebay that may have been written by this guy. Also, I love people that use listing sites as a forum.
Leprosy is rare & scarce but nobody wants that!
