Stolen 4003 alert
This original post comes from the RIC Corporate Forum -
This was actually stolen from my son (whom I bought it for as a high school grad gift) in March fron the Univ. of Alberta in Edmonton. Campus security and Edmonton Police haven't a clue. S/N 0520806.
Sent out some emails to other musician friends in Fort McMurray and Edmonton but so far no leads.
Odd story: Several electric basses were stolen from Grant McEwan College (Edmonton) the next month and the perp was caught but the cops wouldn't follow up on this for us. We thought there might be a link.
Any info appreciated...and rewarded.
Thought that I'd post it here for the original poster. Hopefully someone can help this poor kid out.

I have PM'd Mike this info. I am not sure his email is till current - so I am also reposting this here.
Looks like the bass has been spotted and has now been parted out by the NJ Butcher.
Original sale was out of Fort McMurray Alberta on Nov 18

Can someone go after the butcher for fencing parts from a stolen bass (hæll, he bought a stolen bass!)?Ontario_RIC_fan wrote:Looks like the bass has been spotted and has now been parted out by the NJ Butcher.

Re: Stolen 4003 alert
It is possible the original owner recovered the bass, and then sold it on November 18 on Ebay.
Only way to know is to contact the person who posted the stolen thread over at the RIC Corporate forum in the first place.
I was not able to log on there today, otherwise I would have tried to do that myself.

Re: Stolen 4003 alert
Let's hope this is the case. While it sucks to see a Rick get dismantled and its pieces pread all over Creation, it's even worse to have it done to stolen property.Ontario_RIC_fan wrote:It is possible the original owner recovered the bass, and then sold it on November 18 on Ebay.
I guess the loss of Ricks keeps the machines at the factory spinning, so there is a bit of a bright side, I suppose.

Re: Stolen 4003 alert
I looked up the statute of limitations on stolen property in NJ and it appears to be no more than 5 years.
Re: Stolen 4003 alert
If the original crime took place in Canada it might present an interesting international legal question. Laws vary not only by country, but also by state, and within a state there can be different classifications of theft with differing limitation periods (and who knows how many places the instrument has been before reaching NJ). Even then, the limitation might be on prosecution, and recovery might still be possible. There was a story a few years ago about a guy that had just recovered his Camaro that had been stolen in something like 1969.jdogric12 wrote:I looked up the statute of limitations on stolen property in NJ and it appears to be no more than 5 years.
I had my first Ric (white 1978 4001) stolen in 1989. I still keep my eyes open for it.

Re: Stolen 4003 alert
I think the point is that you never stop looking for a stolen Rickenbacker.
7 years on there may not be much that can be done, but sometimes RICS do get reunited with their owners. The stolen 1980 FG 620 12 was one that made it back to its owner again in Texas.
I am pleased John Hall contacted the guy who posted the info on it back in 2007.

I contacted the dad (who posted it) myself. It was pretty easy to track him down using google for about 2 minutes. I swear I shoulda been a private dick. I suppose many would facetiously argue that I am a public one instead!

Re: Stolen 4003 alert
I also contacted the dad a few days ago via facebook.
To be honest he seemed quite reluctant to do anything about it. I think he thought we got the wrong bass.
I gave him all the information needed, I hope he'll be able to get it back.

He probably got sick of all of us bugging him - in retrospect I would not have done it.
