Which would be the best sounding amp for a Rick and at a good price? Markbass looks like a winner to me but which model. I would want one to be loud enough to compete with the drums and be heard in small gigs. Thanks.

You'll probably get a different answer from everyone that posts. Some are going to say Ampeg SVT, some will say Markbass (the LMII is what you should look at), and I'll say Ashdown.

You just answered your own question! I have the LM II, using it with Traynor and EV cabinets.

I also like the sound of an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro through a 2 x 12 cab.

i have the 1-12 mini combo-it is quite loud on it's own,and with a 2nd cabinet at 500 watts,you should be able to cover ANY gig situation. it sounds great with everything i put through it,but seems especially nice with my 4004 hb pickups-clarity and growl for days....it's not exactly inexpensive,but the quality is first-rate. i personally would love to hear a littlemark2 head pushing one or two mesa boogie scout cabinets-that should be a killer sounding rig.

I second the vote on Avatar cabinets. I use their 2x10 and it's plenty loud and punchy , and easily managable to cart around. People who swear by 15's for bass are impressed by it. I'm not fond of carting around heavy all-in-one combo amps, and I also really like having the option of being louder than the guitarist, so I use a plain vanilla stereo power amp head, and then add a pint-size preamp in the front like the Sansamp Bass Driver or a Yamaha NE-1. This way I can experiment with different inexpensive preamps, (which is really where the color comes from) and it's nice to be able to carry the power amp and cabinet seperately in two trips without breaking my back with a heavy combo amp that's going to get banged up being manhandled. The preamps can also be used alone for recording without needing to haul the cabinet along. For larger gigs I can mic the cabinet and/or use the DI out on the Sansamp to the PA. The stereo power amp is usually run bridged mono, but it also gives me the option of adding a 15" cabinet and going stereo if I'm feeling fancy. I find more flexibility and weight advantages in using seperate preamp, amp, and cabinet components as opposed to investing in a combo amp that you may or may not end up liking for its specific color. I was jamming in someone's studio, and I didn't like their house bass combo amp, so I just plugged in my little preamp to bypass their combo's preamp, and voila, there was the sound I'm familiar with, and I didn't need to drag along my cabinet.

I use a Yorkville XM200T combo amp. It's a 200 watt amp with 2x10" speakers. The tone is excellent, and very powerful. You can also get the 115 extension cab, and it makes it sound very round and present. The whole rig will run you about $900.
