4004Cii Cheyenne Trustrod Problem
Dear Rick Brothers
The top adjustment nut on the right trustrod (the rod that runs under the G and D strings) has broken off. Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to do to get it fixed? I'm ready to send it anywhere. I love this bass and want it nursed back to good health. The bass is a Model 4004Cii Cheyenne. I'm not sure what year it was made.
Thank You
This Forum is excellent. I really look forward to the interesting posts, and pictures off Forum members showing off their basses.

Hi Robert you can buy replacement truss rods from RIC, but you'll have to wait until the holidays are over to get them. It's possible that Pick Of The Ricks has a set in stock http://www.pickofthericks.com
True Tone Music is also a RIC dealer. contact them also. 714 Santa Monica Blvd Santa Monica, CA 90401 (310) 393-8232
Look on the top and bottom of the output jackplate for the serial number, then you can decode it on the RIC website.
If I can be of any help to you. I'm in Orange County.

Thanks Joey. Those are excellent suggestions. I'll probably have to wait till after the holidays, but you've placed me on the right path. If I run into trouble, I'll try and get in touch with you. I appreciate you offering your help.

Re: 4004Cii Cheyenne Trustrod Problem
One VERY important question.....is your neck p/u right against the fretboard or spaced closer to the bridge?
Against the fretboard would look like this......

If it is next to the fretboard the truss rod swap is pretty straight forward.....if it's away, then let's just say the proceedure is a little more involved (we'll cross that bridge if necessary).

Robert, if your 4004 has the neck pickup up against the fingerboard, this will be a fairly easy repair. If, however, the pickup is an inch or so away from fingerboard, it will require routing two truss rod access channels from the pickup route to the truss rod cavities. The finish will need to be repaired in this area when the job is done. If you don't already have a luthier to perform this repair, I can also do it. I have someone else I would send the finish repair to. I work in Northridge,Ca.

Dane and Brian are right, the repair is much easier if your bass has the neck pickup positioned right up against the end of the neck.
Robert do you have any pictures of your bass?

Brian, that 4004L would have been cool to add a third pickup to, sort of like an LK

Joey, get rid of the middle one and let's see it with just the two pickups nearest the bridge and neck.

Ricksquad,
The pickup is about an inch from the neck. I wouldn't be able to do the work myself, so if anyone could recommend someone in the L.A. area. that would be great. You guys do some amazing work on your Ricks. Pluging it in and changing the strings is about as far as I get. Joey, that paint job on your Cheyenne is beautiful.
Thanks again

The LK bridge p/u sounds great soloed just off of the bridge. My intent, had I kept it, was to have the Red Laredo get three p/u's spaced like the LK, three dual-concentric controls and some headstock reworking to accommodate 8 tuners...then refinished in non-yellowing white. It was a grand plan but, alas, not to be.
A three HB-1 p/u 8 string Laredo would be killer (IMO).

Robert, you must mean my Jetglo 4004Cii, thanks!! The one in the picture above was Brian's Jetglo 4004L. That trans red 4004Cii of your is a beauty, I've always wanted one like that. Unfortunately it will have to be repaired like Dane explained, because there is no way to get the old truss rods out without making a small route for each truss rod, where the body meets the neck.specky wrote:Ricksquad,

More like the late '60s 4001 experimental bass shown in the Smith book.rickenbrother wrote:Ah, you want it like a 4005!!jps wrote:Joey, get rid of the middle one and let's see it with just the two pickups nearest the bridge and neck.
Re: 4004Cii Cheyenne Trustrod Problem
I performed the exact routing on the exact same bass, my own 4004TR. The routes weren't small though, as I had to extend them all the way to the pickup route. One of the truss rod nuts had come off and was loose inside the cavity at the body end. Rather than have the routing refinished, I opted for a pickguard to cover up the work with my V63 conversion.
