Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
We know my favorite band (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) are famous for using Rics. I'm sure this has been brought up before, but what are all the Rics Campbell and Petty have been seen with or have simply owned but have never played in public?
This is what I've got so far...
Tom:
362/12 JG
360/12 NS MG
365 OS FG
1997 FG
1997VB FG
370/12RM
660/12TP
Mike:
620/12 FG
615 SPC JG
360/12 NS FG
350 JG
360 Capri FG
330 Capri FG
That's about it. Anyone got anything else they can add?

Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
Tom and Mike have a large, well-secured building where all their gear is stored. Everything is inventoried and is readily available, from what I've heard. Vintage Guitar ran a feature on Mike last year, I believe in March or April? IN it, there's a photo of the two of them in the warehouse with stuff stacked all around them...
Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
Well, I don't have a warehouse full of guitars but I have two well secured rooms in my house. Both with alarms on doors and windows as well as glass break detectors.
Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
How about the 4003 and the 4003S8 SPC Rednecks?
Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
4003? Now that you mention it, it's been said that Ron Blair's played a 4001 owned by Petty, but I've never heard of the group having a 4003...

I have that issue of VG saved in my music room. Cool cover shot.

If memory serves me right, Petty was the victim of an arsonist several years back.jingle_jangle wrote:Tom and Mike have a large, well-secured building where all their gear is stored.

Yes. The year was 1987. According to the book "Coversations with Tom Petty" and the documentary "Runnin' Down a Dream", Tom was planning a birthday party for his (then) wife Jane. It started somewhere around his daugther Kim's room, and caught fast. He lost many things, but his home studio downstairs (with all his electric guitars) and his Gibson Dove acoustic survived the fire.
Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
I've only seen that older jetglo 4001 played twice by Ron Blair, normally a Fender guy.
The first time was in the Stevie Nicks/Heartbreakers video "Stop Draggin my Heart Around":

The second time was early 2007 when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were on the Jay Leno show here in the U.S. It was a two Ric night, as Tom also played one. I think Mike played a Vox.

Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
That's correct. Ron used the 4001, Tom used his 360/12MG, and Mike used a Vox (looks like a hollow bodied version of this Mark VI) with built in fuzz-tone his wife bought him for Christmas 2005. However, the performances was in July 2006, not early 2007.
Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
Yep, July 2006. I stand corrected. Man, does time fly!I posted about it (with others) on the Ric corporate forum:

Re: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Rickenbackers
Just watched "Soundstage" on PBS with TP & The HB's 30th anniv. show from Gainsville, FL. Part 1 tonight was the first hour of the show. Ricks hot and heavy all night with 360V64, 360/6, 360/12, 1997, whatever the 615 SPC thing is sightings. I did DVR it so I'll go back over to see if I missed any. No Rick Bass appearances, though.
Good stuff.

Which song did he use the 360V64? Or a 360/6? I know Campbell was playing his custom 350 if that's what you're thinking.janglerocker wrote:Just watched "Soundstage" on PBS with TP & The HB's 30th anniv. show from Gainsville, FL. Here's all the Rics they used that night.
Tom:
1997 with gold hardware - Free Fallin', Don't Come Around Here No More
360/12NS MG - Saving Grace
1997VB - Mystic Eyes
660/12TP - American Girl (oddly enough, the guitar was tuned to Eb rather than concert pitch)
Mike:
360/12NS - Listen to Her Heart, Free Fallin', Down South
350 - Runnin' Down a Dream
