It's only the case...

Post by bob_atherton »

To be fair to the seller he does state clearly that it is a 4001/3 CASE that he thinks is from the 1970's. Sounds about right to me.

Who, the bidders? Definitely. The owner of the clearly marked auction? Definitely not.

The ad does say, "What you see is what you get". I see a Rick bass in the ad. That may be a buyers arguement. Instead of stating "What you see is what you get", it should have said: This ad is for a case only, the bass is in the picture for demonstration purposes only.

If anyone is confused by the auction, they have some issues that go beyond basic reading comprehension. To even mildly imply that he's trying to get one over on someone is just silly.
Vintage Rickenbacker Bass Guitar Case for 4001 / 4003

Here is a really nice vintage Rickenbacker bass case. Perfectly contoured for a right handed 4000 series bass. Nice, large divided storage compartment for all your essential gig stuff. Not sure of the exact vintage. Looks to be 70's or early 1980's. What you see is what you get. Protect that investment! Use a hardshell, not a gig-bag!

48 lower USA bidders only! PAYPAL ONLY! Payment due within due within 48 hours of auction end.

On Jan-21-08 at 07:31:32 PST, seller added the following information:

PLEASE READ THE LISTING CAREFULLY! THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE CASE ONLY!

On Jan-21-08 at 10:25:32 PST, seller added the following information:

The bass guitar is only shown as a reference to show how the contoured padding of the case fits around a 4000 series bass guitar.

Upon re-reading the description,, it sounds better since he made some edits.

Its a "buyer beware" world.

What is the difference between the following auction titles:

Vintage Rickenbacker Bass Guitar Case 1970's? 4001 4003

and

Vintage Rickenbacker Bass Guitar, Case 1970's? 4001 4003

The only difference is a single comma, but the meaning is completely different. To say the seller has not cashed in on this misunderstanding is a tad over the top, especially seeing the photo with the bass appears in an eBay search for this item, and as everyone knows, a picture paints a thousand words. It shouldn't matter what the title or description specifically says in fine print, what should matter, and what does matter in most courts of law is what a reasonable person would be lead to believe. I am lead to believe that this seller is hiding behind a pretty thin excuse... That fact that we are even discussing this auction, and that bidders are clearly confused is enough to determine that a reasonable person could be mislead by the actions of this charlatan. Are we not reasonable people?

The text as it stands now is pretty clear. I'm not sure I'd feel bad for anyone who bids on a high-value item without a close reading of the auction text, let alone even a little skimming in this case.

I'm sure anyone who was confused has a legit reason to withdraw their bid, but in this case at least two people have bid 1k plus ...

If this guy was trying to mislead anyone, he'd have written the auction text much more misleadingly. No, in this case I think the blame is very much with the people who are bidding without paying attention to what they're bidding on.

Plus, since he made revisions to the original listing after bids were received, every bidder gets notified that there is a change in the listing. EVERYTHING rests on the shoulders of the buyer.

" Il venditore ha modificato la descrizione dell'oggetto"

My Spanish is good enough to understand that sentence in Italian.

That case is just like the one that came with my March '73 4001. But my 4001 looks a whole lot nicer than that one :D
