Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
With the hoopla of the Jon Camp bass being sold on Ebay now, I have had several interesting (off line) Forum conversations about celebrity owned Ric basses.
Just for haha’s I thought that it would be fun to post a list of which iconic basses the Forum found to be worth the most.
So, for our nonsensical exercise here, list which basses you think are worth the most, and how much they would go for at auction. Assume that the basses had iron clad paperwork proving their pedigree.
Here is my list
1 Paul McCartney’s 1999RM $2,000,000.00
2 Chris Squire’s 1999RM $500,000.00
3 Geddy Lee’s 4001JG $250,000.00
4 Geezer Butler’s 4001 $150,000.00
5 Geddy Lee’s 4080JG $120,000.00
6 Mike Rutherford’s 1999RM $100,000.00
7 Roger Waters’ 1999RM $100,000.00
8 John Entwistle’s 4005LS $80,000.00
9 Cliff Burton’s 4001 $75,000.00
10 Rick James ‘4001WHT $25,000.00
My Honorable mention list
Lemmy’s 4004LK
Jack Casady’s 4005LS
Phillip Lynott 4001

I think Squire's, Burton's, Geezer's and Rutherford's would go for less, Geddy's 4080/12 might be more. Entwistle and James' might be more seeing as how they've passed on. This is pretty interesting for a nonsensical thread!

Wow,
COOL thread....
Not to forget Geddy's 2000 or 3000 series bass. I'm not sure which one it was, but I have a photo of him playing one, next to his 4001 & his 4080.
Not a BIG TICKET item for sure, but collectible as well I'd imagine.
Also, Roger Glover's 4001 from Deep Purple albeit it butchered..

Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
since i have major lust for one like it- either mike anthony's or tom petersson's early 4000's. (insert ridiculuous big bucks amount)
Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
Wait, Geddy's 4001 isn't stock. Neither is Cliff's. 1000 max for either, because of work needed to restore to factory.
(yes, I'm kidding!)

Don't forget Roger Glover's Rick basses, surely responsible for one of the most memorable and iconic rock anthems, "Smoke On The Water." I think he had two, a Jetglo and maybe a Burgundy, both modified at some point with Jazz-type pickups mounted at an angle. He recently had the Jetglo restored at a luthier in Milwaukee (3-5 years ago).

Cool thread, Dave!
I think Geezers would go for less since he really is not thought of as a Rick player and didn't use one for very long.
I also think Rick Jame's 4001 would be the least prectable as for how much it would go for.

if lynott's ever came up, i'd sell a kidney for it.
Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
I think Butler's is overvalued, Entwistle and James undervalued, and ask where is Bruce Foxton on the list? No guess at the value.
Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
Hmmm......... me thinks I'd pay more for Squire's than Lord McCartney's. But I'd take both. I'd go deeper for his Hofner than his 4001.
Yep, ok, glad I got that squared away, who do I make the checks out to? I made about $3000 last year jamming. How do I take the $2.5 million deduction?

Gary "Mani" Mounfield from the Stone Roses and his 3000. No idea on a value though. They were the days...
Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
You guys have got it all wrong. The order should clearly be:-
1. The mid '70s 4001 AZG which was pictured between Star Stowe's legs in the Playboy Centrefold - $10,000 easy
2. Dave Paton's jetglo 4001 - famously featured in the 1975 video clip for Pilot's drop of musical brilliance "January" - $5000.
3. The '70's 4001 FG played by Jim Porteous of Rabbit, Australia's contribution to glam rock featuring Dave Evans the original lead singer of AC/DC - type in "Rabbit Wildfire" in Youtube and you'll see just how tacky these guys were - $1500.
4. The 4001 played by Mark Evans, who played on the first four AC/DC albums - $5000.
5. The drop-dead-ordinary 4003 MG which was advertised by Guitar Center on eBay for two years straight - the one which gave us the saying "Rock Out Like Motorhead" - $1000 - all it was ever worth!
Dave, thanks for providing me with the the opportunity to waste more of my precious time!
