"Back From Rio" tone

Post by donnellbw »

Another kick start for this neglected Forum:

I know that Roger McGuinn has used various combinations of gear over the years, but the guitar "personality" on the
"Back From Rio" album, especially the opening notes on "Someone to Love" and "King of the Hill" seem to have less of
the "bright" jingle of earlier Byrds and more droning hang time. Does anyone know more specifically what Roger used for
this very nice sound? It would have been the early 1990S.

I can get rather close to those note tones with my "94 360 12 MG with 12Ks through the dimed gain channel on my
Crate Vintage Club 212 with EL84s and 12AX7s with only an old Boss EH-1 Enhancer to clean and brighten the amp
signal. What was his gear of choice then?

I would say that for the most part (without doing the research) that the guitar was more than likely his 370/12RM thru a Roland JC-120 when he used an amp...some of the guitar was probably done like in the old days too, i.e. straight in to the console with outboard gear (compressors)....hard to say what they would have been in the 90's though...

This record was heavily produced........

i hear some kind of chorus-effect, which would hint to the Roland Jazz Chorus 120...

by the way, i prefer the "Rio" sound to the classic old-school jangle 8)
