Roger with the Light Show Ric in 1973

Post by 8mileshigher »

I had not seen this You Tube mentioned before on the Forum, Eight Miles High with a Light Show Rickenbacker... takes you back to those trippy days.

And yet another video of the same song. Note the different Rick. This one appears to be a standard 360 12 in fireglo. It begs the question, how many Rick 12 string guitars does this man own? Judging by his hairstyle, I'd guess this was filmed in the '80s perhaps.

Two interesting points:

1. That's not the Byrds. That's Roger solo right after the reunion in 1972.

2. I did not know that there was a 12 string lightshow. Very cool and where the heck is THAT baby now?

1. The band he's playing with in the video is the "& Band" of "Roger McGuinn & Band" fame, Roger's third solo album. That's Richard Bowden playing the Gibson SG and bassist Steve Love. Close inspection reveals that Roger is wearing a "Peace on You" cover t-shirt. I actually saw him wear that same outfit performing at the old Cellar Door in Washington, DC. So that would date the video ca. 1974-75.

2. Roger's lightshow was in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for a while, but he had it restored and actually toured with it around 2001. He played it with Paul Shaffer's band on Letterman (just sitting in, no separate performance) around that time. I agree, it is a very cool guitar.

Second video has Rick Danko and Richie Havens.
Pretty cool. But too bad can't hear Richie at all.
