Spring on Accent

Post by Rick325man »

Is it possible to safely mechanicaly bend the spring in the Accent to increase the break angle of the string as it approaches the bridge in order to get a lower action? I understand that with time (although never specified as to how much time) the spring is supposed to shift and thus the action would lower. I have had my 325C64 for a year, play it regularly and use the vibrato, but there really has been no change. I find it somewhat frustrating, since I love the sound and neck. I also have a 1983 - 320 with a Bigsby on it, and I am able to get a nice and low action on that one? Any suggestions out there? Thanks!

The spring on an Accent is made from (surprise) spring steel, which by nature will not easily bend (hence its selection to perform this vital function). In addition, this spring has been chrome-plated, which often renders the steel even more unforgiving , due to a characteristic called "nitrogen embrittlement". Although this does not compromise the function of the part in this configuration and use, embrittlement could cause it to crack if you would attempt to bend it beyond its normal service limits.

Solution: leave he spring steel alone and lower the bridge a bit.

Thanks, Paul, for your advice. I have lowered the bridge as far as it can go but unfortunately, the action is still high. I appreciate your help.
