Blues vs Rock

Post by charlyg »

I'm hoping to get a discussion going about the differences, or the sameness of rock vs blues.
For my opening salvo, I submit two youtube vids of an old blues tune called Going Down. Unfortunately I couldn't get the Jeff Beck version I wanted, the one with Max Middleton on keyboards, but I think the Beck/SRV makes the point. So, here's Freddie King, and then Beck/SRV. Volume, speed, and overall more edge to The Beck version. More feel, soul, groove to Freddie IMHO.

Well, the Freddie King version sounds more jazzy with that organ, and the drumming in certain parts, then that vocal kind of tends toward Gospel, well, it's really the call and response of African music.

Stevie Ray Vaughn was influenced by Jimi Hendrix, and that video shows it.

Ever hear that song, I think it goes "the blues had a baby and they called it rock 'n roll" ?

Oh yeah, but some don't want to give any credit, especially the "progressive" types!
