WHAT BASE guitar does Chris Squire use on "The Yes Album"? What method should I adopt to play at his
standard? What strings does he use? How does he get that distinctive treble sound? What kind of amps
and speakers does he use? Has he got the ordinary or stereo Rickenbacker?

´I play a Rickenbacker bass
guitar, which I converted myself to stereo. My amplifier is a 160-watt Sunn, made in America. I have two 6x12
cabinets. I use a Cry Baby wah-wah pedal, a Marshall fuzz-box and a set of Hammond organ bass pedals,
which go through a separate Fender Dual Showman amplifier, with heavy-duty JBL speakers. My strings are
Rotosound roundwound. Sometimes on stage, but more often in the studio, I play a Fender Telecaster, and
I've also got a Guild fretless bass which I'm hoping to use in the near future. Copying another player is a
difficult achievement, as his sound is obviously the result of personal ability and choice of equipment. But
my advice would be to use the same strings as I do and concentrate on having a lot of treble and half the
amount of bass on your amplifier and guitar and not to play too loudly. --- CHRIS SQUIRE, Yes

I apologize if this was posted before however it is some great info, cheers

Thanks for the post, Andrew and welcome to the forum. It's been quiet here lately, but with Yes tuning up fpr their Summer tour, there should be lots of activity.

Anybody hear about a set list yet? I think I'd like to be surprised myself, but I'm hoping for some of the real classics not visited lately. How about "A Venture, To Be over, Machine Messiah, Parallels, Beyond & Before, Lightning Strikes and, of course, Close to the Edge", etc... I'm sure Oliver can pull these off!

Jim, you always seem to name the songs I've enjoyed over the years. Albums too. :)

ahhhh Beyond and Before... the first Yes tune I played live.... whatever they play I'm sure it will be like so many times I've seen them before - a flowing river of music and I'm going on the ride!

I like all of your picks except for "Lightning Strikes". No way will Jon sing "Machine Messiah".
I really want to hear "To Be Over".
And...
PLEASE DO NOT post the setlist. I want to be suprised. If the setlist is going to be leaked, by all means alert it with
**SPOILER** warnings so I won't be PO'd.
Thanks.

I like Lightning Strikes because of the driving beat and the quasi-African feel.

Thanks for the welcome,
I should have stated that the article above was from 1972 :S

What a great find! I have been a Squire fan since 1974 when I discovered my older brothers Yes records. I picked up a Bass because of Chris Squire (a Univox Rickenbacker Copy with the salary of a 15 year old. Salary = odd jobs, the $20 dollar bills you get in birthday cards from relatives, etc) I later went on to purchase a white 4001S, when I was 17 to play in a Genesis cover band, our keyboard player was the son of a doctor and owned a Mellotron, a cut down Hammond organ with a leslie cab, Yamaha electric grand, and Arp syn. I think my lower disk back problems stem from moving that freaking huge leslie cab up and down stairs.

During my Art School days I switched over to alt music and Fretless bass, I sold my Rick and bought a Ibanez Musician Fretless and a fretted Roadstar.
I was heavly into Mick Karn from the band Japan, David Bowie, Roxy Music etc.

Over the years I completely forgot about Yes until about a year ago I listened to Fragile and Relayer out of nostolgia and I had a case of 'Why did I ever sell my Rick?'... I recently bought a 4003s with toaster pickup and then a 4001 v63 MG
and my love affair with Rickenbacker is rekindled.

I remember my first Yes concert, the waiting in line the night before to buy tickets at the local Record Store... the great seats on the floor for the Tormato tour in the Round!

Cheers,
Andrew

Don't worry, Thomas, if a set list gets posted here, it won't be by me. I like surprises as well. But since we're on the subject, let's find out how everyone feels - Do you want to see a set list if one becomes available, do you want forumites that attend shows to give a "play by play"? I think that the tour is short enough that we can all wait until everyone has seen them to discuss the details. Sure, it will be hard to wait, but posting too many details may taint the shows for some. Opinions, please!

Great story, Andrew! Bet you wish you still had that 4001S! My 4001S is currently being refinished in a nice shade of yellow, in fact, the Luthier has sprayed some test shots for me. As soon as I get down there to approve the tests, he'll get started on the real thing and he's promised to have it ready by July 1st. I don't know if I'll have an opportunity to show it to Chris in Hershey, but I'll give it a shot.

I know Jon won't touch the songs from DRAMA. Pity, because he asks Steve to play Trevor tracks, Alan plays lots of Bill's tunes, etc... They could easily do Tempus Fugit with Chris on lead vocal. Come on!

I may start a new thread on the set list topic, so refer to that thread for the response.

I think that piece was from "Any Questions?" from the Melody Maker.
They used to do a regular piece where you could ask all sorts of technical questions and usually it was Chris Welch a long time Yes fan and journalist who would do the article.
I think I remember reading it myself way back in the early 70s.
