Roy Buchanan

Post by charlyg »

I thought we had a discussion about him, but I see no thread title here, or in the Blues section. I stumbled on to a web site and am about half way through this article, and felt the need to share it. He is one of the fellows just as comfortable with blues as he is rock.

I saw him in the 70s, and, no doubt, he was one of the greatest guitarists of all-time! I always make sure his name is mentioned in discussions I am in. Never to be forgotten.......

One of the saddest examples of a musicians worst friend which of course is the abuse of alcohol.
Ray Buchanan may have been one of the best guitar players I have ever heard. If there is anyone
here that is not familier with his playing they are missing something amazing. I wish someone
would do a movie of his life and its tragic end.Such a waste of an amazing talent. I miss him.
I am not against the consumption of spirits by any means. My doctor has instructed me to drink a glass
of red wine every day. Some time I have many more then one. I have seen it ruin many musicians
lives in my short stay of 58 years on this planet. In Ray Buchanan case it lead to a tragic end which
should never have happened. I wont go into details but the police should have and could have prevented
it form happening. His passing was a terrible loss for his family and every guitar player out there.

Thanks for posting this Charly. You have come up with some real gems and Roy is definitely in that category. He was a truly gifted and unique guitarist who established a whole new benchmark for guitar players around the world. I love his music and his sound.

It is truly a tragedy when a musician of this stature is picked up by the police for being intoxicated in a public place and placed in a cell to dry out, only to die a presumed, self inflicted death by hanging. His death immediately resulted in allegations of police complicity by those who knew this man the best. I suppose that we will never learn the truth of his passing.

I have experienced first hand the pain of hearing that one of the worlds greatest musicians and a person that I counted as a friend had succumbed to his weakness. His over indulgence also culminated in his early demise. It is not an experience that I am ever likely to forget. Alcochol is a substance that is widely tolerated, but it can be a silent killer for those prone to use it in excess. My apologies for the sermon. This thread has stirred a painful memory.

I would hazard a guess Charly that's because many of the artists that we both prefer, are able to cross the genre thresholds at will.

Dire Straits does deserve a thread in the very near future. Mark is a great guitarist and a gifted songwriter.

Buch lived next door to a guy that I used to know that had an auto detailing business in Springfield, VA. Both lived in Reston, VA in Fairfax County and my friend used to hang with Roy's daughter. The word that I got was that Roy and his wife had a "domestic situation" and he'd left the house while under the influence. FCPD picked him up and took him straight to the detention center after his wife had filed a report. It was a few hours later that they found him in his holding cell. All indications that I heard were that Buchanan suffered from bi-polar disorder.

There are many great stories regarding Roy here in DC when he was with a group called The Snake Stretchers. They played regularly at The Crossroads in Bladensburg, MD and their shows are legendary. Many of the top Rock stars of the day would show up to get a listen including Mick Jagger and Keith Richards who'd wanted him to be Brian Jones' replacement in the Stones. He turned them down and that lead them to eventually hire Mick Taylor.

We've been blessed to have had some killer guitar players live here over the years with a list that includes Danny Gatton, Buch, Roy Clark, Bill Kirchen, Eddie Angel (Los Straightjackets), Link Wray, Chick Hall, Sr. (Glen Miller), Charlie Daniels and many more that you've never heard of that could hold their own with anyone of name recognition.
Wherever you go, there you are

One of the great ones....I did not always like his tone on some songs but he was a master. I think there was a pretty good public television show about him a number of years ago?
