The shedua stripe lasted the life of the 4001 model - they fazed the 4001 out in the early 80s but some trickled out as late as 1985.

Looking at the auction, I believe someone took a late model 4003 and put a 4001 TRC and probably a jackplate from 1977 on it. Buyer beware!! Not many pictures, and very misleading ad copy.

I have asked the seller for more pertinent pictures and why there is no shedua stripe.

Actually the old 50s and 60s 4001 basses had no stripe ... the stripe started about 72 I think ... and was discontinued with thw 4003 basses ... also the 4001v63, 4001cs, and 4001c64 are really more 4003 basses than a 4001 bass and they also have no stripe ...

The 4003 was a significant upgrade from the 4001 in many ways ... so much that they gave the 4003 a whole new model number ...

I would date that bass on ebay as a 4003 in the 1987 to 1997 era.

I don't see the '77 on eBay, unless it's Jetglo. Can you link?

http://cgi.ebay.com/1977-Rickenbacker-4 ... dZViewItem i guess they took it off, thanks for the info, so the 4001 never came without the stripe then, only when the 4003 started, did they come without the stripe , right?

Jeff is correct as to pre-'72 - my November '71 has no stripe...

Thank you Ed, It's in nice shape.

Back on topic...gotta watch ebay nowadays. Lot of fraud going on, both intentional and otherwise.

I don't think it was fruad ... I think they made a mistake ... in my mind a 97 4003 is more valuable than a 77 4001 ...

i have a 2007 and i like it , sounds great, the neck could be a lttle less chunky, but i have an 88 musicman and its a got such a great vibe, i thought an older ric might be the same way , my 2007 feels brand new and shiny, it lacks the old vibe,

I went back to the auction and it is ended with no bids - and no question from me showing. I still think something is fishy.

I look at it this way 4001 = walnut wings, no stripe. Stripe, no wings
