When an updated history of Rickenbacker is written, it should be noted that Olivia's was one of the major forces driving up prices ...

That 350v63 for $1300 was a pretty sweet score. Too bad it didn't go to someone who's going to play it.

People paying the prices are the ones driving up the prices.

I commend Olivia's for running a great business model.

Buy low, sell high... yeah, they're real innovators...

Innovation has nothing to do with it; it has more to do with timing and resourcefulness. I love seeing them flourish. And I love seeing the people here complain about it even more.

Nobody is forced to buy Olivia's gear...or anyone else's for that matter!

If it's seen to be overpriced, it simply won't sell. They do a good job on their auctions, and make instruments look very sharp, and that's part of the reason why they have been successful.

They have raised the profile of vintage Rickenbackers, but the actual $$$ rise is a little harder to factor. Vincent Gallo is still the main player in raising overall prices in the last 5 years, but I'm talking about basses here...

Matt Malley of THe Counting Crowes certainly helped raise the value of the 4001CS.

I used to live in the Carbondale, Illinois area where Olivia's is based. Olivia's is just the store's online name. The actual name of the store is O,V & C. For almost 30 years it was called Golden Frets (SIU alumni will no doubt remember this store on the south end of the infamous Strip). When the place was called Golden Frets, the prices were actually somewhat reasonable, and the owner, BIll Carter was good to deal with. Since Bill retired, and the store was moved off the Strip, the folks who now run O, V & C seem to indulge in a bit of price gouging. The last time I was in Carbondale, which was about a year ago, I went into their store and it was practically empty. The guy working at the counter told me that they save all of the "good stuff" for E-Bay.

While I don't condone price gouging, it's the idiots who knowingly pay way too much because they "gotta have it" that drive up prices. The best way to stop price gouging is to not let dealers get away with it by not paying their outrageous prices.

c'mon when you want something to play.... are you going to wait for it for bargain price for years or are you going to get it and use it? that's the difference between player mentality and collector mentality. all that matters is how your coin bag is doing....so well they are getting expensive - well what's the news? everything is getting expensive.
schecter 12 costs what 610/12 used to cost so that's the life.
dusan palka who is also known as grazioso on infamous auction web site

I think I've said this before around here, or at least something similar. The price really only matters to two folks--the buyer and seller. I figure I'm pretty typical in the scheme of musical instrument marketing--fortunate enough to occasionally have some disposable income to splurge, and the time to shop and compare. I know I've occasionally paid top dollar (or at least not paid the lowest possible price) for an instrument I really wanted...and on occasion I've gotten some great deals (some thanks to the folks around here! :D ).

I don't have any issue with a seller asking a high price for their item--as unrealistic as it might be to a lot of us, if it sells, it's likely because it was worth it to someone else, and I say "good on" both of them!

FWTW...

It always cracks me up when anyone gets blamed for "driving up" prices when we talk about used merchandise or collectibles. In general, we all sell for a price we hope we can get, and we all buy at a cost we believe is worth paying. All the opinions in the world won't change those actual numbers.
