California Guitar Trio

Post by jps »

We just came back from seeing the CG Trio at Night Town. Wow!!! They did some of the most amazing music on three six string acoustic guitars (with effects where necessary), all tuned in fifths. Some highlights were Toccata & Fugue In D Minor, Echoes, Tubular Bells, Larks Tongue In Aspic Pt. 2, an amazing version of a Bach lute suite using a technique called circular playing where each guitarist played one note following each other around for the whole piece, making the three guitars sound like a harpsichord!

Go see these guys if they come around your parts. :D

I've been listening to them for quite a while - XM plays them a lot. Google them; how they learned to play and how they met makes a very interesting read.

I know they spent a few years studying under Robert Fripp and they were on staff with Robert in Japan at one time. Have you ever seen them? I am listening to some CDs I bought at the show and live is SO much better, seeing the interaction between them is a treat.

The CGT are brilliant, though I can't get my head around their favoured tuning.

You should check out the CD "The Bridge Between" by the Robert Fripp String Quintet, which is Fripp, Trey Gunn (on Chapman Stick, or maybe Warr Touch guitar) and the CGT. Lots of great tracks from originals to Bach, including a wonderfully overdriven solo Fripp version of "Chromatic Fantasy". From memory it's largely live. Having been used to the very precise, mechanical side of Fripp, the fluidity of a lot of these tracks was eye-opening.

Haven't seen them, but I can only imagine how great live would be. Maybe someday they'll hit the 'Zoo.
