Askamudgeon: stripping teflon from aluminum...

Post by sharkboy »

Hi Paul. Long time no talkies. I figured I'd ask here, since, who knows, maybe somebody else wants to see some nekkid cake pans sometime.

I'm goofing around with some new amp designs that utilize teflon cake pans for chassis. Any suggestions for the best way of taking off the teflon? I have a few that I know I can mechanically strip as I need for an earth GND connection, but I'd really like to be able to strip and paint some- is it worth trying?

Thanks. Hope everything in Northern CA is going fantastically well for you.

Yikes. Pan chassis, hey? Whatchoo been smokin', Mark???

Paste-type paint stripper should work, although I've never tried it. Simply fill the pan and leave it for an hour. Zip-Strip, that sort of thing from a hardware store/home center.

Lemme know how it works.

Thanks Paul! I will try what you suggest- I really do like the idea of using some chemical assistance for this.

In answer to your question: nothing. People consume large quantities of mind altering substances in an attempt to feel like I do all the time. I don't think they are successful (and I don't necessarily recommend either.)

The pans that I'm using have more curves and dimples than I'd like, but they were cheap and will work. These are small, single-ended amps and the circular shape provides support for the top. I'm using some baker's pans that have a top and a collar and will be adding some extra mechanical support.

Mark, bake a cake before stripping them.

My past cake situation is part of why I alluded to my Godzilla appearance with respect to 600 series guitars in another thread. I have made peace with the repurposing of the bakeware.

Besides, I have other vessels if the survival of civilization requires another cake.

And now I have to stop thinking about cake.

BTW: I don't want y'all to infer the wrong impression about what I said before: It is truly great to be me, but I am a professional (at being me- it is how I derive my living) and thus this feat should not be attempted at home or near open flame or on stage, etc.

There are few things in this world that I like more than a white cake with butter cream frosting. It would seem to be a perfect food, as it has some fat and is high in vitamin S- in fact, only sugar has more sugar than said proper cake.

That all said, I'm hoping that this amp thingy will work out fairly well, despite the reduced calories and that whole "inedibility" thing.

Just a note: in no circumstance should one try to burn off a Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE) coating, as the process produces especially toxic gases (hydrofluoric acid {HF} and carbonyl fluoride {COF2}).

And that also doesn't go well with cake.

Point well taken. I will also do the stripping of the pan out of doors and probably wear a respirator for close work. I can't imagine that there's anything good to inhale from the breaking down Teflon under any circumstances.

Thanks,
