How many RIC owners w/12k toasters?

Post by donnellbw »

Since this forum refers to "modern" RICs, just how many of you out there have RICs with the 12K toasters? We talk a lot about both hi gain types
and the new scatterwinds on these forums, so I am curious to hear from those that have them (and on what model) . They seem to be a rare breed,
so tell us about yours. (Maybe we need a special forum line for the "don't un-wind" group? Peter?)

Yet another RIC "sound" to be explored for the readers.

I love them all. Scatterwound toasters have the great vintage brightness, but the pre-scats have a real kick and substance to them. Paul Azp. has them on his new old '97 WB TUR. Perhaps he can chime in and comment.

I have five Ricks with the 12 K toasters. I don't have any with Scatterwounds yet. They rock! I couldn't be happier with them. :D

Well, you'll have to wire up some new toasters and give us a comparison! :) With multiple WB's you are in a perfect position to provide us with results from a truly scientific method-based experiment.

My 1997 has two of the non-scatterwounds.

Do not attempt to adjust your browser, it is in fact a lefty. 8)

Jason,

I like your nick name for them, "pre-scats". That's a "keeper"!

I did once put a capacitor, briefly, on the bridge pre-scat and it just seemed to block all the rich bite out of it (it was, I admit, an off the shelf
Radio Shack piece). Anyone else with other results? BTW, Richard, your lefty is a beautiful example.

I sent a 330 to Dale for conversion to a WB; it will have Scatterwounds, so when it's done I'll be able to do a great comparison. :D I'm looking forward to being able to compare the two.

I'm not sure if anyone else has done tried this, but in addition to my 12 k toasters, Sergio built a couple of overwound toasters for me as well at 14k and 15k. I like the sound of those as well.

I even like the sound of the 12k toasters on my 381/12, thoughI've never played a 12 with the scatterwounds, so who's to say I wouldn't like the more chimey 7.4k toaster. Still , I often us OD/Dist with my 12, which the 12k toasters are supposed to go better with. :D

If you want to hear a 330/12 with scats, just listen to my track on the forum CD (first half of the song).

most of my guitars with those are not really 12k. they are just bit hotter. my early mcguinn has 9.2k , my late mcguinn has them hotter, 92' 360v64/12 around 11k, 92 381v69/12 around 10k, 93 660/12tp 11k, 1999 660 around 9k etc..that doesn't necessarily mean that they sound all hotter. i think that that hot sound has more to do with strength of the alnicos than anything else here because the ultimate in you face hot is that early mcguinn with 9.2k. and of course it still doesn't sound anything like my 66 360/12 with 8k which among my modern guitars - and to my astonishment - has it's closest counterpart in 1980 620/12 with earlier green bottom high gains... so it is advanced alchemy after all. 8)
now to spill the beans a bit: i have been working with my friend (no names) during the most of this year on humcanceled pickup guts that would sound close to hot so called 12k. i have A prototype here and so far it is testing well to my ear.

I put 2 in my 610, they came from a TP 660 JG I bought around "98" that someone monkeyed with by putting a different nut on it. The guitar needed to be set up and I let it sit. In the meantime I put the pickups in the 610 and they sound great, especially with an old tube style Fender amp. I had someone I knew restoring it back around 2002, so I ordered the right nut from Rickenbacker and gave it with the guitar. The guitar ended up missing, repair person said he gave it back, F%@#? I still have pickups and original certificate of authenticity. Still looking! #351 serial - I45729 Don't mean to be a bummer about the post, any info would be great and those 12k toasters rock!
