"77 4001 Bass

Post by kotadawg »

I may have the opportunity to purchase a '77 4001 Bass. I'm not a bass player but I would like to add one to my collection. I would appreciate any advice on what to look for so that I know it's original, and if there are any problem areas with this model. All I know at this point is that it has Rick-O-Sound, the original case with orange lining, and the original bridge pick-up cover. It's supposed to be in good condition. Also if someone could give me a price range. Thanks.

Look at the neck where it meets the fret board near the nut. Look at the top and the bottom. If there are any cracks there, then it has been "adjusted" by a guitar tech that didn't know what he was doing. Many Rick 4001's have unfortunately fallen victim to guitar techs that were too busy to learn the differences between how the old Rick truss rods work and how they differ from the truss rods of other brands.

That being said, it is possible to have one of these repaired and repaired quite well.

But I'm kinda picky and I personally try to stay away from Ricks that have been mutilated by idiots. Your call, but I'd knock a couple or three hundred off the value for a break/repair.

Mid to late 70s 4001 basses are wonderful. Great necks, super tone, great playability. If you get pictures and want them evaluated, post them or links to them and we'll have a look at them. Price range - tough one. Clean with just a few dings (like headstock or dents in the CV finish that does not break the CV might be in the $1500-1700 range. Buckle rash and edge chipping or wear on the back of the neck would take about $200 off, and Jeff covered neck issues. Make sure it has Rick pickups (higains with the button-head nails) - delete up to a couple hundred for replacement pickups. All these issues can be overcome with replacement parts, but there is cost and the buying price of the bass should reflet this.

All IMHO of course.

Actually the 4001 is Fireglo. The seller never responded and the ad has been pulled. I'm not surprised since it was listed for $800.
