Rickenbacker 12 string

Post by ricnbacker »

I came accross a Ric 12 string at a "Vintage" guitar stroe today.

body style seemed like a 620

can someone help Identify the make and year by this serial number

SI 4493

this guitar had no jackplate like my 4003. the jack was on the body and that serial number was on the bridge.

thanks

It's a 400 series from September 1979. Most likely a 450/12.

There's one for sale in London right now:

I have no affiliation with the dealer, I just saw it on Ebay recently.

Simon,

I am not buying it, I play bass I was just curious to the details.
It is a fireglo and in really nice shape. The tuners looked a bit aged but overall it was in nice shape. I think they are asking about 2 grand.

Thanks very much for your reply. For anyone interested, they've quoted me $1850US, which based on the Vintage Guitar Guide 2008 is $150 west of the high end of the excellent range for this era. AKA: too much for me! The search continues...

DON'T go by the Vintage Guitar Guide for Rick prices, Simon--they can be wildly inaccurate, and because the prices quoted within are largely based upon auction prices, can also be quite out of date.

ALL Ricks enjoyed a price bump slightly over a year ago, and prices on most have been steadily rising over the last few years, with some models even doubling in value (481s have nearly tripled).

A '79 450/12 is a rare bird and must be one of the last made. I'd say that $1850.00 for one in this condition is a very good price, no doubt down from $2K due to the economy. If I didn't already have a 450/12, I'd jump on this one myself.

i'd still give them bit more time it may come down a bit, there is not so much demand for 450/12 from late 70's (beside me and couple other lunatics here :) ) and btw the original asking price about a year ago was $2999. - no i am not kidding. if you look at their other stuff it is bit on high end too.
dusan palka who is also known as grazioso on infamous auction web site

All good advice people! I'm tempted to keep looking because I'm allowed one more in my guitar collection to get to double digits (I have a swag of 1st generation Yamaha electrics, several of which look like upside down Ric 4001s) & it will of necessity be my only Rick - so it has to be right - and I'm on a strict budget. In any case, I asked them a series of follow-up questions on post & packaging a few weeks ago & they have not responded to them, so they're not queuing up to sell either.
