Hey all -

I've started this topic for the bands & musicians featured on RRF 2 to come and post the nitty-gritty 411 on themselves. With just a two-page inner fold to work with, it was barely enough room for me to simply list all the songs & artists and a few additional credits & thank-yous. So if you're on the CD, please indulge us with song lyrics, a who's-who personnel listing of your band, photos of the band, photos of your gear, recording techniques... any piece of crucial info that the rest of the world needs to know about you & your song.

A note about the process and scope of recording my songs:
Both songs were recorded on an iMac G5 running GarageBand software. All production, mixing, instruments and vocals by myself. My studio is in the wheelhouse of my sailboat. These are two songs from a demo album of original music with a classic rock feeling. As of writing I have seven songs completed for the projected album, to be called, "Be Bread". My intention with these recordings is to establish a relationship with a producer who could help me to take my songs into a real studio and do them right with other musicians involved, then to put out a CD and start playing the material out. All the seven songs can be heard at my website, as linked above

Thanks to Marty Step, Doug Adamz, JD, Jeff and Kritter for their direct assistance.

Except for my Rickenbacker and Martin instruments, all my gear is modest. I'm poor as a churchmouse. It's mostly junk. I'm junk too. But the songs are stellar.
The music gear includes Behringer AC112 and BX1800 amps,
1987 Tascam 424 Portastudio as a mixer,
new M-Audio Keystation 49e for software instruments, all standard GarageBand plug-ins,
mixed using for reference a pair of 1974 Bose 901s (orig. EQ, natch), with a modern Sony solid state amp,
Shure SM58 mic,
Behringer FCB1010 midi foot control board for wah and volume pedals,
Boss RPQ10 preamp/parametric EQ,
the guitars are my c.1981 4001wal, 1982 320jet, a heavily modded Squier mini. 2008 Martin D16RGT.

A studio on a sailboat! How cool is THAT!

That TASCAM 4-track looks almost identical to mine, except I think mine is a 464. Those things are awesome. I used mine to record my first album, Dysfunctional Illaureate.

For my song 'Throwaway' I used my 1968 4001 MG as the main bassline,


and my 1976 4001FL doubling the bassline during the quiet middle section.


The '68 was recorded direct, through a SWR SM-400 head + 4x12 Hiwatt cabinet, and through a Vox AC-100 head + 2x15 cab. The guitar parts were played on a metal-rific Charvel that I bought in 1990. I'm not really happy with the guitar sound on this mix of Throwaway, and given my propensity for OCD when mixing, I'm sure this song will go through a dozen more remixes before it makes it to my 3rd album. I also sang and programmed the drums using an Alesis HR-16.

'Throwaway' was all performed, recorded, and mixed by myself using a Roland VS1680 digital 16-track this past October.

Okay, my submission, or rather my band's submission, was "Entry-Level Blues", by The Jazz Funeral.

Everything was recorded into my ancient-yet-still going strong Roland VS-2480. The mastering was done in Logic.

The guitar used on the track was this one ('87 381v69):


I used the middle pickup position, with D'Addario Chromes strings. All guitar tracks were run through a Janglebox, and Boss DD-20 (for slapback), and a modded Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer into an AC-30 CC.

The bass used was this one "(99 4003v68):


It was strung up with TI Jazz Flats, and I played it with the mutes up on the bridge pickup. I ran it through the "Pepperland" setting on my Bass POD and added slapback echo through the board.

Also featured predominantly is my mid 80's Yamaha M1A, with a touch of organ on my Yamaha Motif 6 and a bit of glockenspiel as well:


All instruments were played by me except the drums, which were played by our drummer, Mike Parascandola. All vocals are me, except the middle "chorus", which features the whole band.

John - I noticed that you mixed 'Entry Level Blues' in mono. Was this by design of keeping in line with the Brian Wilsonesque quality of the tune? I know he mixed the Beach Boys material in mono because he was deaf in one ear.

I sang all the parts. I used my '67 4005 through a Pod set at Pepperland, '66 360/12 (Jangleboxed, IIRC) and '87 1997VB through a Fender Blues Deluxe.
Shamus guitarist Dino played one rhythm track with his Tele, I played one with my 1997 and double tracked my Gibson J-185.
I played the lead, doubled, with the 1997 & my Strat and play those little flourishes on the first bridge with the Strat.
Shamus Perry played drums after everything but vocals were recorded.
Last thing I added was the tambourine.
Had no words when laying down vocals, no arrangement, no plan,

Well, this is just more or less a live demo really. No overdubs or post production to speak of, other than the panning of some tracks left and right. That is why the vocals are a bit quiet in the mix.

All my 3 Rics feature, (330/6, 360/12, 620/6)
The 360/12 is routed through a Janglebox before going into the Vox AC30.
The others have no other FX other than what is available on the AC30's.

The bass is a hofner (Laney amp).
The keyboard is a Korg.
I think that the drums are a mixture, but as I don't understand drums or drummers, I'll say no more than that!

Recorded onto a humble old Roland VS 1880, and then mixed straight onto CD from there.

The vocal effect on the middle eight is actually me singing through a megaphone (bullhorn?)

The lyrics are certainly not my best, but they serve a purpose and suit the style of song well.
