Bass Case For Ten?

Post by ben_brown »

As some of you may know when I'm not not playing my Rick basses I spend most of my day in a cabinet shop. I am a cabinetmaker by trade and have been doing so for close to 20 years. We built kitchen cabinets, entertainment centers and an occasional piece of furniture from hard maple, oak, cherry, mahogany, hickory, alder, red & white birch but we use soft maple for our dovetail drawers. It is cheaper than hard maple and looks good with a lacquer finish. One day this past summer I came across a few interesting boards...

I'm really diggin' the flame!

So I got this idea....I'll build a cabinet to hold all my "stuff"

Image
The frames for the front, sides and doors are hard maple and I used the soft maple for
the door and side panels, all of the drawers and the drawer fronts.

Image
The flame in the hard & soft maple really stands out well but each has it's own characteristics.
Image
Image

Almost ready for sanding...Image

Image

Image

Some assembly required....Image

Image
The CNC Router I use to cut out cabinet parts also doubles as a workbench sometimes...
Image

Image

These things were extremely heavy. My son and I had no problem moving the first one into
the house but the second one seemed to be a bit heavier than the first and ended up being
a statistic...
Image
I'll fix it one of these days....

Anyway....this is what I came up with......
Image

Image

Plenty of storage for tools, goodies etc.
Image

Image
MapleGlo anyone?
Image
Safely tucked away...
Image

Dovetail drawers...Image

Image
Easy access...
Image

Image

Image
The flame in this soft maple is wild!
Image

Image

Image
I once had a bass that matched! :?
Image

So there 'ya have it...."Bass Case for Ten". Plenty of storage for my girls.
The one on the right will stay upside down until I repair the damage to the base.

Image
They're not full yet....3 to go....
Image

Image
Makes for a nice workbench too....

Steve,

Wow! Beautiful!

Great idea too, but you should move it into the bedroom where all RICS belong!

It looks great.

I'll take one in Walnut please, with a skunk stripe across the top, you can bring it with you to SERF!

Cool, really cool!

Very NICE! I'm a real wood freak myself and just love flame & quilted maple. That's a great idea and turned out very nicely! I just love that flame! I'd love to have something like that, but I don't have enough basses to fill it... yet!

You could always put a picture of that bass in one of the drawers.

I could send you a few new ones if ya want...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

You have done that gorgeous wood justice. Beautifully conceived and flawlessly executed, Steve. The simple hardware is an excellent choice; anything more ornate would have competed with that beautiful wood for the viewer's attention.

In one word, "wow"!

Steve, this "project" turned out even more beautiful than I imagined. Your work is art. What a beautiful way to keep your Ricks. That maple was truly inspiring, and like Paul said, "beautifully conceived and flawlessly executed." Kudos, Sir!

And it's MapleGlo!!!

Thanks for all of the nice coments guys......and gal. :D

...and to receive such a review from the master himself! Thanks Paul!
I like the subtile look of the thin handles and hinges. I was entertaining the idea of some CB perfling around the edges of the tops but I didn't have a source.
Maybe one day when I feel rambunctious I may decide to tackle that project.
