Your favorite strings to use with Rics?

Post by JakeK »

I was wondering what are the main strings you use on your Rics. I coverted to Thomastik-Infeld flatwounds last night, and those babies sing! I end up using less compression than I normally would when using D'Addarios, and they feel and sound nice! They are my main choice of string with a Ric hollowbody!

TI's in general, though I do go through roundwound phases occasionally (not much of a preference when I do - Ernie Ball/D'Addario usually does the job for me).

I should add that I usually go for .011's or .012's, but I currently have a .010 gauge set of TI Flats (wound G) on my '60 360F that I am really digging.

I can't stand flats on a 6 string. TI Flats are GREAT for 12's though.......so this poll should really be two different polls.

I use Ernie Ball regular 10's on just about every guitar I have, including Rics. I just like em...

I put down "Other" because I pretty much use Rotosounds. It's not really clear on this thread whether you're asking about Gutiars, Basses, or just Ricks in general.
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I mean Rics in general. This includes 6 strings, 12 strings, Hollowbodies, Solid Bodies and basses.

I find the D'Addario Chromes to be the best value for my taste. Flats, semi-flats for 6-strings, Jazz flats for bass. Pyramids for guitar sound great but are very high tension so I haven't used them on a regular basis. Haven't yet tried the T-I's but I plan to.

+1

Or Rick strings when I can get 'em or Dean Markley signatures.

I have converted to these on my 4001 basses...they have "the sound", seem to have a good life span, reasonably priced, plus the features below...

Stock Rickenbacker strings for my 6- and 12-strings. Playing life is more than satisfactory and I like their tone and resonance. I usually keep a batch of sets handy as I prefer to restring 'em routinely. Regards.....Goofyfoot.

I don't think I can choose just one. My 4003 is currently strung with TI's, and my other bass has DR High Beams on it. If I had only one bass and had to choose...I couldn't because my first two choices give me completely different sounds.

Bass and 6-strings: Elixirs (sound very good for a long time)
12-strings: Rickenbacker (sound great for a reasonable amount of time)

Jake, I love T-Is on Rics. I've only owned 325s, 350s, and a 360 C series, but these strings and Rics just seem like a marriage made in heaven.

FWIW, I use them on several other instruments as well--Casino, J-160E, Jazzmaster, Jag, Mustang, even a Telecaster. They're lively strings for flats (to my amateurish ear, anyway), and they feel fantastic on your fretting hand.

I picked TI as half of my basses have TI strings on them:

TI Jazz Rounds on both of my '73 4001s and my Fender California Precision Special.

TI Jazz Flats on my '08 4003.

TI Acousticores on my '05 Rick Turner RB4FL.
