should i be worried?
ok i have a ric that was shipped to me it was going to be deliverd friday the 9th i called fedex that morning before i left for work and told them no one was going to be here could they bring it by after 5pm they said they will let the driver know well i got home at 4:30pm to find the driver was here at 4:22pm
anyways i called them to ask if i could just pick it up at the fedex hub later that night they told me no since it was still on the truck but i could pick it up saturday or they could deliver it saturday so i told them ok just deliver it then since the fedex hub is 30 miles away so i sit here all day yesterday and no fedex and i just checked the tracking and it still says its on the truck to be deliverd saturday the 10th i called fedex to see if i could just go to the hub tomorrow to pick it up and they say they are closed mondays but i could pick it up tuesday
so im worried about the guitar due to the cold weather since its only been about 30*f and down to about 15*f at night how long should it sit in the case before i open it? will this cold weather hurt the neck? will the finish check?

Jerry: it will be fine, but be sure to warm it up gradually. I would keep it unopened for 48 hours to be safe. I have had the best luck with this rule when receiving a Rickenbacker during the cold winter months. Do not place it near radiators, fireplaces or heat sources but rather let it warm up in a room that is comfortable for yourself during the winter.
You will see other posts here that have argued that 48 hours is an excessive amount of time. I would wait the full time especially seeing that it has been stone cold like this for an extended period. Waiting too long is far better than opening it too soon.

I live in a So Cal and I've always waited at least 30 hours before unpacking a guitar that I've taken delivery of during winter since it mostly likely had been subjected to cold temps somewhere in it's travels.
The cold temps will not affect the integrity and strength of the neck.

When I know something substantial is being delivered by Fed Ex, I always call and speak to the manager and let them know the tracking number, and confirm the delivery date. At that point I explain that I have a 300 dollar an hour recording session booked with a nationally touring act , and cannot afford to have the piece delivered late. I then let them know that I will be calling back to confirm once the online tracking states that the item is at their hub. The one time(after starting this procedure)a friday delivery was not made, I phoned the manager, and he assured me that it would be there before 10am Saturday. 9:18 Saturday morning, my guitars were delivered.

When you receive the guitar, remove the case from the shipping box(es), but leave the case closed. The case is sufficent to insulate the guitar and allow it to warm gradually. 24 hours in the closed case should be enough, but if you're worried about, leave it in the case for 48 hours.

Another way to insure the guitar's finish remains factory-fresh is to NEVER take the guitar out of it's case.

Like the guys mentioned cold wont be a problem with 48 hours time.Its the excessive humidity or excessice dryness that can harm your finish.That,ll be a long 2 days.

That 48 hours could be the hardest to sit through since Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte's second outing.

Here is a story that hopefully doesn't have the same ending as yours:
Friday: came home from work to discover the UPS sticker on my door saying "we missed you, please sign on the back." Called up UPS that night and asked if I could pick it up the next day (Saturday). They said yes and put a note in their computer that I would pick it up Saturday. Then, during that conversation, they said "oops, we aren't open on Saturday." So I said "Fine, just deliver it on Monday." They said fine.
Monday: no package. Called that night and they told me that their computer said that I was going to pick it up that day (Monday.) I explained the conversation that we had on Friday night and they said they would deliver it Tuesday.
Tuesday: no package. I called again, explained the previous two conversations, and they said they would deliver it on Wednesday.
Wednesday: no package. I called and really chewed out the manager (no point in chewing out the poor telephone operator) and she said that they would call the local UPS center and find out what was going on, and then call me back immediately. No return call.
Thursday: no package, no return call. I called them up, repeating everything again to the manage (different from before), and was told the "package was lost."
Friday: no package, gave up and told the shipper to file a claim, which he did.
QUESTION: how do you lose something when it starts off on the truck, they cannot seem to deliver it from the truck, nor can they make it available to pick up? Where does it go?

i would say that it is about equal fedex or ups. i have had bad experience and lost packages with both. fedex ground is using local operators for delivery and you can't even tell who is it coming with it when you see them sometimes.... no uniform, truck with no logo. the only thing they truly broke was big amp once but they lost things couple times. ups has in my case fewer lost items but more broken items. i sometimes wonder how much theft problems these companies have. i really like regular mail lately. usps can't employ ex-convicts...so far. fedex had one such weird driver here in the past that i was afraid to leave my kids alone at home to take the delivery...

Like you said, FEDEX Ground hires "independent contractors" to deliver. They own the trucks, etc. These drivers aren't really sketchy, but these drivers can BUY a route (or several) and hire their own people to deliver for them. That's where it gets tricky.
I highly doubt that their is a driver misconduct code at UPS for a driver "Defecating in his truck". But guess what? FedEx Ground does. Need I say more?

Jerry, wait the 48 hours. And I have had really good luck with either UPS or FedEx by having the packages sent to me c/o my work address. Deliveries at my house leave $1000 amp heads on my deck, packages on the front step in plain view of the street (40 feet away), and wet and soaked packages. I think delivering to a business gets better and more prompt handling. At least around here.

I suppose I'm lucky - my UPS driver takes care of my deliveries - never leaving them outside where they can be seen by the passers by on the street or suffer the wrath of mother nature. The guy who delivers where I work on the other hand must have been a baggage handler or trash hauler in his previous life - the heavier the package, the harder he throws.

i just got off the phone with fedex im only 1 hour away from going and picking up my deep freeze ric then the long wait of 48 hours till i can look at it or play it i need to move to florida.. plus today marks 1 year that i have been waiting for my 360/6fg i wonder if it will be built this year
