Winter in northern Minnesota

Post by melibreits »

My husband had the digital camera out this morning to show some of his friends in warmer climates what we have to deal with every day here in the northeastern corner of Minnesota. The temp was down to -14 overnight, with a windchill well beyond -50--that's BELOW ZERO, folks! Here's a link to the pictures: http://ancientimports.com/images/upload ... Marais.jpg

All of these pictures were taken from inside of our house, as he did not want to venture outside for even a few seconds today!

Clockwise from the top left:

1. This is the view from our upstairs balcony of downtown Grand Marais, with the harbor and Lake Superior in the background--the lake looks like a fog bank because of the sharp contrast in temperature between the water and the air.

2. View of Artist's Point from our upstairs bedroom, with the lake making ice

3. Our old Chrysler parked in the backyard for winter--it's almost completely buried in snow!

4. View of the neighbor's house across the street with large piles of snow pushed up by the snowplow

5. Another view of the snowbanks, taken from our front porch window

6. Another shot of the old car in the backyard

7. Look at the huge snowdrifts between our garage and the neighbor's house!

8 (middle picture) Our pickup truck parked in our driveway, taken from an upstairs bedroom window.... Guess who keeps the driveway shoveled out so I can take the kids to school!

All of this really makes me ponder with increasing intensity and desperation.... Why do I live in Minnesota? Someplace warm and tropical would really be the ticket about now....

I know what you mean, we had a week or so here where the highs were running around -20F  lows were down to -38F. Weird to have it more than 100 degrees colder outside than in the house.

We're enjoying a balmy +2F today...

Nice pix! Our snow doesn't tend to pile up that high, the almost non-stop wind blows it around too much.

Kind of hard to resist..?

Strange how hurricanes Charley and Frances seem to be identical twins...

More than you know Kris, they came ashore within 3 miles of each other! They pounded us pretty good, Jeannie sat on top of us for 56 hours and between the three storms, in three weeks, dumped 53 inches of rain on us...fun fun fun....
