I'm gonna go to the hollywood one, & thought if anyone else was It'd be cool to say hi.

Saw Brian Wilson on "The Tavis Smiley Show" (PBS) this past Wednesday, January 21st. Terrible interviewee, IMHO. Pulleeez spare me the "he's gone through a lot these past many years" rap, too. Look, if you're gonna hype your new tunes and you also know you're going to be asked questions about The Beach Boys, you might wanna give answers with explanations lasting longer than 5-10 seconds. Sheeesh, man. Nothwithstanding Brian, nice save Tavis! You averted the proverbial.....

I didn't see the interview, but what a nice guy. seriously, it makes a HUGE difference when you meet a famous person and they're kind and personable (Unlike some starrs I've been told). signed my "pet sounds", reached out "first" to shake my hand, & made me feel comfortable.

I bought a ticket this morning to see him at the wiltern wednesday night. if there's a poster at the show, I'll be buying one to frame with my pet sounds and ticket, to match my framed McCartney auto'd stuff.

After which all I'll need is a Dylan auto,... that won't be too tough

Rickendelic.....Glad you scored a ticket for the Wednesday performance at the Wiltern Theater, which by the way is a great venue. I teach about four miles from there. Perhaps I was too judgmental of Brian in my posting but I was referring solely to his interview skills and not his musical talent. He has tons of the latter. Tavis did show a clip of Brian performing one of his songs on stage with the entire band. Solid stuff. Wishin' you nothin' but "GOOD VIBRATIONS" at the concert. Best regards.....Goofyfoot.

Best interview I've heard of Brian, was the 1987 one--lasting a full hour, with musical breaks--done by KCRWs late, great Deirdre O'Donohue. He was still under Landy's control, and you could see him struggling to be "real"--to the point of using the "F" word, several times, then asking her if it was OK, on the radio. This was for promotion of his first (self-titled) album.

I met him for the first time (very briefly) at the Hollywood Palladium, a couple of months later, at a Poi Dog Pondering concert (I believe...it's been awhile...). He bought a poster from a friend, who was staffing the lobby table. The poster was something like $20; he tossed her a hundred and didn't wait for change--just vanished. "Not the first time," she told me. She insisted that he was girl-shy.

I just got done reading the Brian Wilson bio "Catch a Wave..." by Peter Ames Carlin, and highly recommend it.

Brian is mentally ill (manic depressive for one), and it appears that he's always been a little different socially. It is almost a miracle that he's still with us after all these years with what went on before. Landy nearly killed him with over medication for the wrong thing - according to the book. Brian is likely on a precise mix of medication to control his symptoms and help him function best he can.

I am a huge fan and highly recommend the Beach Boys multi-CD set called "Good Vibrations". I discovered a lot of new stuff I hadn't been exposed to before, both from Brian and also Dennis Wilson. "Time to get Alone" is a great, great Brian Wilson song. I also recently bought the "Smile" recording, which with prodding Brian finally finished. That monkey is off his back now.

I remember in 2003 he did a concert tour with Paul Simon, and after his set which was first he did some autographs. They announced to everyone in the packed audience that he would sign stuff for 15 minutes. I ran to be in the line and on the way realized I didn't have anything for him to sign! Nor any cash in my pocket! Thank God I found an ATM, bought a tour program, and made it in line right before the "sorry folks, no more people" cut off line. Talking to him was great, and I loved getting his signature. Unfortunately, the person behind me couldn't figure out how to use my Kodak instant camera and botched the picture. Oh well...

As a huge Beach Boys and Brian Wilson fan (he is my biggest musical inspiration), even I must admit that he has troubles today (and much of which were self-induced during the sixties). Still, I always love seeing him.

In a similar situation. I'm a huge Syd Barrett (R.I.P.) fan (see my avatar) he also suffered from some type of mental disorder which has been "glamorized" as too many drugs (which is complete garbage, he was a big LSD user but it did not cause his breakdown). Unlike Brian who emerged to create more music, Syd retreated into his own private world, providing the subject matter for much of Pink Floyd's most successful early work, and never created music again.

I don't "feel sorry" per se, but I think these medical conditions need to be taken into consideration for some "stars" - its not their fault. For others, they are just a-holes by nature.
