New Byrds Influenced Artists
New Byrds Influenced Artists
What are some new Byrds influenced artists? And by new, I mean since the turn of the century.
We know about REM, Les Fradkin, Richard X. Heyman, The Kennedys. For purposes of discussion, I'd say they've all been around a while.
Or, is this a sound that has seen its day come and go?

Re: New Byrds Influenced Artists
I doubt it. I think that sound will have a recurring influence here and there on artists, even if it doesn't dominate their sound completely.
Re: New Byrds Influenced Artists
What got me to thinking about this topic was a video recently posted elsewhere on the RRF of Mary Chapin-Carpenter playing a Rick 12 string. (Was it a 620 or a 660? I forget.) The song she was singing rather reminded me of Gene Clark, although I'm relatively certain she wrote it herself. A Byrds influence there? I guess only she knows.

Not trying to be a wiseguy here, but Springsteen was definitely influenced by the Byrds on his newest CD. "Life Itself" is right out of the 8MH/5D playbook, and in recent interviews Bruce himself has made no bones about it.jimk wrote:What are some new Byrds influenced artists? There are quite a few bands here in the UK that have been influenced by Byrds/Gene Clark. But they're not exactly what you would call mainsteam acts.
I'll get together a list of links for you to check out.

That would be very interesting, indeed Bob. Thanks.

Golden Smog's Until You Came Along is certainly Byrds/'60s influenced.
Here's an interesting cover:

That's good, real good. I missed that song the first time around, I guess.

That's right. Go back and listen to "The Ties That Bind" off The River. Steve van Zandt is playing Rick 12 on that, and he uses a Rick 12 still, in concert, with Bruce. His Rick 12 was in the Phil Petillo's shop when I was there a few weeks ago, having a new nut installed; petrified mastodon!janglebox wrote:Not trying to be a wiseguy here, but Springsteen was definitely influenced by the Byrds on his newest CD. I would expect nothing less than petrified mastodon from a guy who did a six-year gig with the Sopranos.drumbob wrote: Steve van Zandt is playing Rick 12 on that, and he uses a Rick 12 still, in concert, with Bruce. Never IMHO. My 10 year old learned from their version of Mr Tamborine Man! Hopefully he'll be writing some "Promethean" stuff with the 12 stringer at some point.jimk wrote: Or, is this a sound that has seen its day come and go?

The Rain Parade is my favorite Byrdsy sounding outfit!
Take a chance on their first record "emergency 3rd rail power trip", if you don't fall in love with it, I will personally buy it off you!
"time wounds all heels"...groucho - lennon - Jane Ace!

My wife's association (MENC: National Assn. for Music Education) is working with Steve on his "Rock and Roll High School" educational initiative. Last year he comped the group a bunch of tickets, so I was part of the crew that had terrific seats to see Springsteen at the Verizon Center.drumbob wrote:That's right. I had the opportunity to chat w/Steve for a few minutes, and he is unquestionably one of the nicest, most down to earth guys you'd ever want to meet.
Earlier in the day, Elizabeth accompanied his people to Capitol Hill while they drummed up support for funding. She told me that every intern, gofer and janitor got the same attention, autograph and time for a picture as the Congressmen did.
Re: New Byrds Influenced Artists
I'd never heard of The Rain Parade. "I Look Around" sounds like a cross between Byrds and Beatles.
Thanks for the tip!

Re: New Byrds Influenced Artists
The Pretenders' latest album "Break Up The Concrete," has a cut with a definite Byrds guitar part and vibe. The cut is "The Nothing Maker," and it sure sounds like a highly compressed Ric 12 ala McGuinn.
Re: New Byrds Influenced Artists
Well..guess not too new but a nice version...
