Seeing McGuinn on 4/17, Irvington, NY
Been gone for a while, but glad to be back. The wife and I are going to see Roger McGuinn at the Irvington Town Hall Theatre on Friday, April 17, which just happens to be my birthday. We grabbed two of the last orchestra seats available. I'm hoping to arrange backstage passes to have Roger sign the pickguard from my 330-12, the article I wrote on him in Premier Guitar, and my copy of Younger Than Yesterday, which is also autographed by Chris Hillman.
Anyone else going?

Great! Please report back to us after the concert.

Drumbob.......I'm not attending since I live on the other coast. But I sure would love to read about your reflections on the evening. If it's anything like your Premier Guitar article, it'll be worth the wait. Have a righteous time on the 17th celebrating your b'day, brah. Keep on keepin' on.......Goofyfoot.
Play on, pick often, jam with any Rickenbacker, and prosper.

I will definitely report back after the show. I am really psyched for it. My wife wanted to know what we were doing for my birthday, and I said, with no hesitation, "We're going out for Italian food, then we're going to see Roger McGuinn." Done deal. Now, I'm looking for a good Italian restaurant in Irvington, NY. Shouldn't be hard to find.goofyfoot wrote:Drumbob.......I'm not attending since I live on the other coast. The wife and I saw RM on 3/21 in Elgin, IL (Chicago area). I put a short review of the show in the Byrds' Forum titled RM Show 3/21, if you'd like a review. I imagine the show will be similar.
I hope you have better luck, with the autographs. It seemed that that kind of stuff was being discouraged in Chicago and everything had to go thru Camilla. If you get backstage, please make the suggestion of a little less Martin and a lot more Ric.
Please post a review.

Yep, standard for a few years now. Of course, you have a special "in" that hopefully will trump all that.

Hey Bob
Have a wonderful time at the show. Bot, don't be surprised if you get disappointed on your quest for autographs. Perhaps the fact that you wrote the article will count for something, but RM's wife, Camilla, is pretty much the judge and jury for favors, and the answer is usually "No". I saw him a few years ago in a small theatre in NJ, ans even though there was only a few people waiting in the lobby, she was very discouraging about "free" autographs, and/or an audience with Roger, although there were signed CD's for $20. Definitely not a fan-friendly experience, but a great show, nonetheless. Enjoy, and good luck!

I hope having done that article will get us backstage. I'm going to call Camilla and see if I can arrange it. I'm bringing a copy of the interview for Roger, so I have a good excuse to see him, I suppose. We'll see.

Hey Drumbob,
I will be curious to see your review of the concert. My wife and I just saw him here on March 14. That was the second time he has been here in two years, and we thoroughly enjoyed both shows. This time, however, he started offstage with the Rickenbacker doing "My Back Pages," strolling on stage to sing at the mic. We couldn't hear the Ric, and his vocal mic only kicked in after he started singing. He stopped, apologized for problems with the guitar, and switched to the Martin HD-7 to finish the song. He never even tried the Ric the rest of the night. I saw two other recent reviews of his show who both had similar experiences; problem at the beginning with the Ric; and the rest of the show acoustic.

What a joke. This "intro" mishap has been happening at what seems like every show I read or hear about, for the last 12 months or so. Either 1) it's part of the act, 2) he's losing it, or 3) he's even dumber than I thought he was. The guy made some neat music, but geez, get it together guy!!!

Wow - the exact same thing happened at the show I attended a few years ago in NJ. It was the battery in the guitar; RM changed it quickly and the show moved on with a LOT of Rick guitar. Strange.
Maybe he should order a new guitar!

I wrote a letter to the art center director at the theatre Roger performed in criticizing the poor sound quality with lots of distortion. It is the second concert I have seen there this year with sub-par fidelity; the first was a Poco concert. Their reply was that they are at the mercy of the artists and their equipment requests, or the artists' sound engineer. They blamed Roger's wife Camilla for the failure of his wireless rig on the Ric, and the mic flub, saying that she was in the control booth and did all the cueing. I didn't quite buy that, especially since the Poco sound wasn't good either.

Jim...From what I have heard, Camilla controls absolutely everything about Roger's shows, including what he plays, what he says, etc.steambyrd wrote:I wrote a letter to the art center director at the theatre Roger performed in criticizing the poor sound quality with lots of distortion. And that came from an extremely reputable individual, well known to everyone on this forum. I can't violate his trust and mention his name, but trust me, you all know who this guy is.
