re-birth of a '72 4001

Post by brycycle »

last summer, i snagged a supposed factory re-finished MG '72 4001 from a shop in Seattle.

when it arrived, it was clear that this wasn't a pro re-finish. shoddy sanding wiped out some of the neck and body binding, JG was left between the eneck and body wings, etc.

Larry Davis has turned it around and will be shooting the clear this weekend. i opted for a dark walnut a la my 4002 and '76 4001.

here's a photographic history of the process up until now.

only decision left is whether to install the stock bridge pup (i don't have the proper cover - help?) or, a re-issue toaster.

 Very nice refin!!!
As I need the bridge position for the location of my fingerplay, I don't like the HS-PU  . Also I personally could not hear a significant difference in sound  .

That's a great looking color, IMO...it's gonna be a beauty. :)
If it were mine it'd get the high gain, as well. Cover or no cover.

1 (almost) down; 4 to go.

thanks for the complements all, i think i'll stick w/ the high-gain...if anyone has a low-profile cover, i've got $ or parts to trade.

Very nice color, Bryce. I vote for the original higain also. 70s pickups are the best, IMHO. After magnet horseys... Actually I believe 8k pups and Ricks were made for each other.

+1

Every time I play my 4003 I can't help but :D at how great the '60s horseshoe and scatterwound toaster combo sound together.

Jeff, remind me - what is the coil wound to on your horsey? The one on my 4003S MGBT is a Sergio rewind at 8k with 5/16" slugs for poles. Great sounding (I use the .0047uF cap) especially mixed with the '73 neck higain (also 8k).
