Experiences of a Newbie

Post by jimk »

I've been playing my new Rick to the exclusion of my other guitar, and coming to the surface only to eat, grab a few hours of sleep, teach a couple of lessons, and hang out on the RRF. Folks, in my not-so-humble-opinion, the 360/12 string is an underrated guitar. And I think it deserves more than just to serve as a jingle-jangle accessory for the occasional Beatles/Byrds/Tom Petty cover songs.

I have dispensed with my thumb pick and gone entirely over to hybrid picking (a combination of flat pick and one or two fingers) when playing the Rick. Just for fun this morning I was playing a brand new song which will make its debut at the May song writers' circle here in Lawrence. It's a country sort of song, and as I was playing it I was reminded of something of the effects that a Nashville picker might get out of his Telecaster....only with the added sonic palette of the 12 string.

Hopefully over the summer, I can put up some home recordings so you can hear what I'm so excited about.

Glad it turned out to be everything you wanted, if not more. I look forward to hearing you in action. :)

It is kind of funny when you think about it, such an iconic guitar being underrated. But so many people sell the 360/12 short. Oh well, I'm content to keep it our little secret.

Thanks Kira. I feel like I've just barely scratched the surface of this guitar's (and my) capabilities.

There in nothing like a Rickebacker 12 string. My JG 360/12 is a WB equipped with modern toasters. Like you I love it. Although I confess I play my 6 string instruments a lot more than I do my 12 string.

Enjoy your guitar Jim. I take it that the wait was worth it. :D

We are honored that you are taking precious time away from your Rick to tell us about it.

I brought my new 660/12 LH on this week's business trip. :D
Normally, I would have brought a Strat, a Tele or a Seagull Folk.

Brian, that says it all :!: :!: :!:
(We'll overlook that bit you said about preferring your 6-strings  )

I think we are all sharing in Jim K's enthusiasm and great relief ...as the anxiety was mounting. It's really amazing, look at how many people have viewed the Forum page on "Group Therapy for Ric Owners-in-Waiting"..... Maybe there ought to be an RRF poll -- how many Ric owners have not waited at least a year-or-more.....
Anyway Jim, we are all happy for you !

Cheers

Me neither.

I find it's much easier and quicker to simply wait for a new one to become available online somewhere. That way you can also make sure you like the features and grain before you throw down all that money.

No offense, Jim...as I recall you got a heck of a deal.

I'm thinking of ordering something, however, as a sort of lay-away surprise for a rainy day someday. Squirrel away a few nuts every month and eventually it turns into a new rick. 8) I wouldn't do that if I didn't have a couple already, though.

Hey Jim!

Glad you're getting some quality time in on the new baby! The thought actually occured to me; "After all this time waiting, what if he doesn't like it?" We're all happy and relieved that it's all worked out so well.

Question - How do you like the reverse order of the stringing (heavy string on top)? I've found that if I don't use a light pick, or pick "up", that the E6 string really overpowers the octave string.

Just curious about your opinion.

Bob
