The first time I saw Yes they did the whole album!
November '74. In fact I have seen Yes do GOD five times.

Check this link and if you want more................
Come to England then!
This is SEYES soundchecking last year at the Robin 2 ( the venue is going to be host to Jon Anderson in July....wonder if he needs a backing band?).
We do Gates Of Delirium as per the 76 tour versions.
If you are quick and get a plane you can catch us at the Cavern in Liverpool next Sunday.
Some audience clips of audio from last September with Gates on are on myspace.. http://www.myspace.com/seyestribute
I have various bootlegs of the Relayer tours and Gates is played so differently on all of them which for me was one of the joys of a Yes concert back then.
Why would anyone want to hear an exact rendition of an album?
So when you saw a great band like Yes in the 70s you got so much more for your money and you had to live in the moment as there were no clips to listen back to.
We never even heard any King Biscuit shows in Britain and until the Yesshows album came out I hadnt listened to Gates for years.
By the way, how do you get the clip to appear as a "youtube" vid and not a link?

Re: Remember when?
the studio verson was SO good, that when i heard it live i was amazed at how they were able to one-up that, and the subsequent live lp version was just great. i really liked the symphonic tour dvd version of this with breslin on keys too,the symphony sounded fantastic going into "soon". so,yeah!
Re: Remember when?
I saw them at Jones Beach then at Radio City the next night during the Symphonic Tour. They were "on" both nights, but at RC they were REALLY "on". When they segued into Soon it brought a tear to my eye.
I watch (and jam along to) the Symphonic DVD regularly - many happy memories indeed!

Re: Remember when?
I just watched the Symphonic DVD last night, killing time while the wife is away visiting friends,
and the two songs I watched from it were CTTE and "Gates". I really like the fact that, along with Ritual, Yes are able to perform those songs along side an orchestra. It really demonstrates how the pieces have such good structure. These guys can still do it!
Pete, the clip sounds great and hopefully we can line something up in August - I'd really like to see SEYES on this trip over. Have that MG bass ready and maybe we can squeeze in more than 90 minutes this time!
After I saw Steve Howe's solo tour in 2000, I bought two lap steels (one is a 1960 Ric) as that part of his playing is what I'm really starting to appreciate. He played "Soon" and "Running the Human Race" as encores and I was biting my lip, very beautiful stuff.
At times I think Relayer is the oddest of Yes albums, but it stood the test of time and stands on its own as a masterpiece. Wish I could convince them to do "To Be Over" live.

Re: Remember when?
Thanks Jim,
Cant wait to meet up again!
I enjoyed the Symphonic tour at Manchester Apollo,it was a brave move at the time.
The keyboards could have been a bit louder for me and the orchestra tended to drag the tempo back a bit but it had some great moments.
One of the problems Yes have had is Rick Wakemans reluctance to play Relayer material.
So after the Symphonic tour when he retuned the set was begging for Gates etc.. but no dice from Rick.
I saw Yes at Wembley in 78 doing the Big Medley and Rick played Soon although it was his way and the strings werent there as Moraz had them.
I know Steve Howe likes To Be Over and I thought Rick might do that one but again no Relayer stuff has appeared in the set (proper) since Symphonic.
I understand from Notes From The Edge interviews that Oliver Wakeman is unfamiliar with Relayer so theres some doubt in my mind if they will ever do any Relayer songs again.
Its actually the reason I started playing the Yes stuff with my band back in 2004 to re-create that 70s sound and see if we could get that edge back into the songs.
Back to the thread,I particularly like the Relayer period bass sound (live and album) its that meaty rasp that comes to the fore in Ritual which was a staple of the
mid 70s set.You could see Chris's Marshall head on the top of his setup but I couldnt see all the Sunn amps that he had on the TFTO tour...anyone know what his amp setup was for the Relayer tours?
Also theres the 8string on Roundabout (encore) that cut right through the mix as I remember.
Patrick Moraz did a superlative keyboard job of both Relayer and Ritual and I know its all "what if" but I think if Yes had persevered into another album with him they would have created a hybrid of GFTO material and Moraz style electronic keyboards that you get an incling of in his 76 tour solo spot.

Re: Remember when?
Hi Pete,
Lots of exciting things happening and I want to meet up again as well, another "mine-confluence" only can we get a guest appearance from your band? I know, last time you did have a show in Bolton, same night Donna's cousin got married in Oxford. I lost that battle but it was a wonderful wedding. You Brits are always fun to hang out with, as Graham and Peter proved at RIO last summer.
When Yes announced the "In The Present" tour, I knew I did not want to see a setlist, but when I read Steve Howe's gear list on his website, I saw no listing of his telecaster. No tele = no Relayer tracks, so I was bummed. But, I forgot about Soon and at the Reading show they performed it, so at least a bit of Relayer was present. Also, on the Montreux DVD from 2004 (?) Steve Howe performs a nice acoustic version of "To Be Over". So, Relayer is not far from their thinking of late.
Let's start a movement for a "Sleepers" tour, like:
Looking Around
The Prophet
A Venture
South Side of the Sky
The Ancient
To Be Over
Turn of the Century
Release Release
Run Through The Light
Into the Lens
Does It Really Happen
It Can Happen
Shoot High Aim Low
I'm Running
Fist of Fire (sorry, Chris!)
The More We Live
I Am Waiting
Endless Dream
Open Your Eyes
Fortune Seeker
Children of Light
That That Is
Finally
Lightning Strikes
Give Love Each Day
Can You Imagine
Not all "sleepers" to be sure, but I'd buy tickets to that show! Fell free to modify with your own favorites.

Re: Remember when?
Done! And just for the record, there are at least forty more that I could add if I really thought about it!
Re: Remember when?
Thanks Tony! The first time I saw Yes live was the Relayer tour in Baltimore MD - and nothing has been the same sense. I had heard it all on the album but wasn't sure it could be done live... man was I wrong!! As insanity drives to war then 'Soon, oh soon the light....' and then there is Sound Chaser - to this day one of my faves. And I think the sales of lap steels took off after To Be Over....man that brought back some memories - Thanks Again!
Re: Remember when?
Soon.... what a song, what a composition (GOD), what an album. Though it did not do really well (PM instead of RW I believe) it has always been one of my favorites. Great memories of seeing Yes live on the Relayer tour, like when Jon begins with the first Soon refrain he was wearing all white and they shot a green laser in a cone surrounding him and it was just awe inspiring. Also great memories of driving around with my (at the time) young son and listening to the King Biscuit GOD version. I have some really nice b&w pictures and also color slides of Yes in the Zoo, back when you could still take a camera in.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane Tony!

Re: Remember when?
The first time I saw YES play GOD (Open the Gates/Solo tour) in 1976 at Roosevelt stadium NJ, It totally blew me away. The greatest stage setup ever (Roger Dean of course). The lasers, the backdrops they used. When they played Soon the backdrop turned into starry night & the lasers fired into the crowd. I will never forget that show. I'm lucky enough to have a bootleg of it & after reading this post I listened to it again & it brought back so many memories of the greatest Yes show I've seen and I have been to about 12 of them since 1973. I only wished they played To Be Over at that show. One of my all time favorites.

Re: Remember when?
Yeah, To Be Over live was ... beautiful. Quite sonic with Steve’s steel. When I saw them in December of '74 the set list was:
(Firebird Suite)
Sound Chaser
Close To The Edge
To Be Over
Gates Of Delirium
And You And I
Ritual
Roundabout
Mind boggling to say the least.

Re: Remember when?
Wow,
My apologies everyone, I lost track of this thread.
Pete, that sound check was great! THANKS for posting. That's the FIRST time I've seen your band play.
EXCELLENT, thanks again for the post. That is just so MELODIC, it really goes deep.
SIGH, I wish the boys well on this tour, hopefully no more excitement this time around.
I don't know if Scotty is traveling with Chris & CO. or not, but I wish them all well. Xilan in for a TREAT if they do go.
I feel really left out on this one, I wish they were at least coming SOMEWHERE in the South within driving range.
Who knows if they will ever get this way again. It's been so long between tours, I'm not gettin' any younger!
Hopefully a DVD will come out of this to tide me over. I wish all involved with this tour safe travels, complete & total success and, if you will excuse the pun, NO MORE DRAMA!

Just SMOOTH sailing, safe travels, excellent music....and hopefully a CD or DVD would make this 5 stars for me!
