I think the one used on TOTP was the John Birch SCDR that Jim had on a 'long term loan'.

The rickenbacker style bass was apparently a J birch bass loaned to Jim.Indeed Ian you are right.

John Birch maintained their guitars and did a lot of customisation on them. He was
notoriously slow about it and lent them lots of 'loaners', which they cheerfully used
on tours to plug his products.
