4004L toaster mod?
What exactly will a toaster pup sound like in the neck position of a Larado verses the two stock HB's?
Can I use the exsisting 500K pots?
I like the tone of each of the HB's solo,,but dont care for the "harshness" of both HB's full on. I'm looking to smooth the tone out a bit. Is this the answer?

I bet a double Toaster 4004 would sound great. The neck pickup may resemble the tone of older 4001s.

Paul Boyer is now the proud (I think) owner of it.

Re: 4004L toaster mod?
I know alot of RRF members have gone the "dual" toaster route, but I was wondering if a neck toaster, bridge humbucker mod would be feasable.?
Do toasters and HB's play well together?

Steve, it is pretty, with nice flame that doesn't always show in photos. It's now in my basement. It had been passed around and started to be converted to a five-string. I've got all the parts and someday I'll put it back together as a fiver, but that will have to wait as my "music room" is being remodeled. Eventually, it will have a nice workbench with strong light and electrical outlets, drawers below for spare parts and tools, and framed posters of Chris Squire and Paul McCartney looking over the work area. Then I'll invite Ted S. up to teach me about wiring.

You can use the stock 500k pots with a toaster, but it will make a single coil pickup sound a bit brighter when used for a volume control. I was wondering something....if everyone who puts toasters in 4004's likes the sound so much, why do they subsequently sell the bass or pull the pickups out?
Re: 4004L toaster mod?
Darn good question Dane.... I do like the HB1s on the 4004. Matter fact I put and HB1 in the neck position of my 4001... cool sound!
Re: 4004L toaster mod?
I did it as an experiment. I loved the toasters in the 4004 but I have a thing about basses being what they are. So the HBs went back in because to me a 4004 should be a 4004 with that huge beefy tone. I now have a 4003 that Mr Rath has just 4-2-5d coming in the mail. That Pedulla in my avatar photo is the most comfortable bass ever. I thought about single coils for that but a Pedulla is a Pedulla is a Pedulla with that hi-fi tone. So my 4003 should stay a 4 string because that is what it is ? No . Making it a 5 means it will be easier to play with my wonky wrists. To me the "perfect bass tone" is the high gain single coils of a Rickenbacker.aceonbass wrote:You can use the stock 500k pots with a toaster, but it will make a single coil pickup sound a bit brighter when used for a volume control. You make a good point Dane. I just like to experiment when I get bored.
I think its time to pick up a new bass, that way I'll leave the Larado alone.

I wonder about that too! I think if I had Jeff's bass in the condition it was in during the time of that photo I would definitely have kept it. (Obviously Jeff had his reasons which he does not have to disclose.) So gorgeous and with that pickup spacing I can't see not loving it to death.aceonbass wrote:If everyone who puts toasters in 4004's likes the sound so much, why do they subsequently sell the bass or pull the pickups out?
